The Academe at 198 is the newest addition to UC Law San Francisco’s Academic Village—a dynamic urban campus where diverse disciplines and institutions from around the city converge. The living-learning hub provides housing for business, law, and medical students from UC Law SF, UCSF, and others, serving as a community anchor in the Tenderloin neighborhood. “My hope for the future is that this academic village becomes a catalyst for other developments, creating a vibrant urban fabric,” says David Seward, Chief Financial Officer at UC Law San Francisco. Thanks to Metropolis Magazine for featuring our Shenzhen Energy Ring project—a new waste-to-energy plant that doubles as a powerful example of placemaking. Designed to be part of everyday life, it makes the invisible visible, turning waste management and energy generation into a public learning opportunity. “There’s one, perhaps strange, aspect of the project: that it’s actually meant to render itself obsolete, not just by turning waste into power but by also educating the wider public about the problem and suggesting better practices,” says Chris Hardie, principal in charge and design director of our Shanghai studio (part of SHL - Schmidt Hammer Lassen). “So if they’re really successful in that endeavor at some point in the future, there might not be a need for something as large as this.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/g-EXqUN5

AI is reshaping not only 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 we design, but 𝘩𝘰𝘸 we design it. Architecture offers powerful insights into how AI will transform the creative process—enhancing imagination, accelerating workflows, and improving the efficiency of large-scale development projects. Matthew Krissel FAIA, principal in our Philadelphia studio, recently joined the Design of AI podcast to explore how we can reimagine the future of design through the lens of emerging technologies. At the National Planning Conference in Denver, our Senior Urban Planners, Cassandra R. and Sarah McColley, AICP, LEED AP ND, highlighted the critical importance of inclusion in urban design. They emphasized the need to engage young people and other often-marginalized communities in the planning process to ensure public spaces genuinely reflect and serve diverse needs. By amplifying these voices, we can design environments that support both mental and physical well-being—especially for teens. Thoughtful, inclusive design not only benefits individuals but also helps cultivate communities where everyone can thrive, connect, and feel a true sense of belonging. Through research, case studies, and powerful stories of teens’ lived experiences, Cassandra, Sarah, and their diverse panel—including youth from Territory Urban—demonstrated how giving teens agency and flexibility in the planning process can transform spaces and strengthen community. Read more about how we design a better public realm for adolescent and teenage girls: https://lnkd.in/ggc5z7Au This panel was dedicated to the memory of Aditi Subramanian, a former Urban Designer at our firm, whose unwavering commitment to creating equitable spaces continues to inspire our work.

Healthcare hubs are vital pillars in our communities, yet there remains a pressing need to improve access to quality care and address health disparities. In Washington, D.C., the Max Robinson Center—our third project with Whitman-Walker—is rising to meet this challenge. Open for less than two years, the center has already made a significant impact. Nearly doubling Whitman-Walker’s capacity, this new healthcare and research facility is on track to deliver life-saving care and support services to over 20,000 LGBTQ+, minority, and at-risk patients annually. “Perkins&Will’s design process, including learning about the health disparities which face residents of Ward 8, helped us deliver a truly purposeful space,” says Naseema Shafi, CEO of Whitman-Walker Health. Through its inclusive design and comprehensive care, the Max Robinson Center is not just improving health outcomes—it’s transforming lives and fostering a stronger, more equitable community. The Center for Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Engagement, and Learning at Winona State University is a model for future academic spaces. Achieving NetZero status and meeting the stringent requirements of the Living Building Challenge, it integrates sustainable practices at every level—from its hybrid steel and mass timber structure to the innovative solar roof. These design elements ensure energy efficiency, water conservation, and minimal environmental impact throughout the building’s life cycle. Beyond sustainability, the design also prioritizes student health and well-being. A prominent staircase encourages movement, countering sedentary habits and supporting an active campus culture. Meanwhile, a tranquil rooftop provides a peaceful retreat for students to de-stress, offering panoramic views of the Winona bluffs. The new building brings multiple departments together in a collaborative, sustainable, and healthy environment, fostering learning and engagement both on campus and within the community. #NPHW #publichealth #environmentalhealth #sustainability

"By fostering healthier, more equitable, and more inspiring spaces, airports can serve people and the planet more effectively," says Jason McLennan, our Chief Sustainability Officer and in-house expert on “deep green” architecture. "This is about doing the right thing, but it’s also about achieving better outcomes for everyone involved, from passengers and employees to the broader community." In this Q&A with aviation principal Scott Gorenc, Jason shares how regenerative design can help aviation move beyond mitigation—toward climate leadership, operational efficiency, and better passenger experiences: https://lnkd.in/gm9uE3H3 #aviation #airportdesign #sustainability #deepgreen #livingbuildingchallenge
