‘Operation Orange Squeeze’ is a work zone safety initiative in conjunction with Pennsylvania State Police that prioritizes the safety of their construction workers and turnpike work crews. Troopers will once again be trading in their cruisers for construction vehicles in April to help monitor unsafe behaviors like speeding and distracted driving across work zones on the PA Turnpike system. Last year, saw 176 reported crashes in active turnpike work zones, resulting in two deaths and 48 injuries. Tragically, 45 PA Turnpike workers have lost their lives on duty since the PA Turnpike opened in 1940.

The PA Turnpike held its third annual Giving Box Campaign as employees volunteered their time to assemble personal care boxes for human trafficking survivors as part of our efforts to support those in need. The boxes are given to the YWCA Greater Harrisburg and distributed to survivors emerging from trafficking or domestic violence situations. Each box carries the label “Packed with Love by Someone Who Cares.” This year's collection surpassed last year's record and will meet our goal to pack 200 boxes, plus supplies, that serve the community for several additional weeks. Stuck in an unexpected traffic backlog? The PA Turnpike has launched a new text messaging service to provide real-time, automated updates to customers when they encounter an unexpected traffic backlog that is not caused by daily congestion or construction. While at a complete stop in a location where it is safe to remain stationary, through hands-free devices and voice command or through a passenger in the car, text “info” to 47676. From there, you will receive real-time, automated alerts about clearance times. This new texting service is a first for any transportation agency and is designed only for PA Turnpike customers.

Get to know one of the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Winter Warriors like Equipment Operator Alan Keeney of the New Cumberland Maintenance Facility. He has been jumping behind the wheel of snowplows with each winter storm to keep the highway safe for customers. While he likes the variety the different seasons bring, winter is the time for Maintenance to shine. And it’s a reminder of the important work they do in keeping the highway safe for travelers.

Thanks to the Governor Mifflin School District students for stopping by our office. Best of luck in the statewide competition!
At Governor Mifflin School District, we believe in nurturing young leaders who work with community stakeholders to serve as positive change agents! These fourth graders have been learning from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission who is leading the way in sustainability practices that minimize their carbon footprint through future initiatives such as inductive charging. After studying the Commission’s Sustainability Report, these students had an opportunity to present to some of the PTC’s leaders at the PTC Administration Building.
