Landing in the hospital with an infection like the flu can put your heart health at dire risk, a new study suggests. Adults hospitalized for a severe infection are more than twice as likely to develop heart failure (HF) years later, according to findings published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. People who wound up hospitalized due to an infection had a 2.35 times higher risk of developing HF, on average about seven years after their initial illness, results show. Researchers conclude that these findings support prior literature linking infection to HF risk as well as the need for more research exploring the potential for infection‐prevention strategies, such as vaccination, to minimize HF burden. Moreover, history of infection could potentially become an important tool for risk assessment and patient management. Using 2023 CDC survey data, new research from KFF reveals that over half of U.S. adults aged 18 to 64 reported having at least one chronic condition such as hypertension, diabetes or depression. While chronic disease is a widespread issue nationally, the burden is heavier in the South and Appalachia, likely due to limited access to care, socioeconomic challenges and overlapping health issues. In contrast, states like California, Hawaii and New Jersey reported lower rates, which may reflect differences in healthcare access and public health approaches. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening chronic disease management and preventive care, especially in the hardest-hit regions. https://lnkd.in/gaXZJvHV I #ChronicDiseaseManagement #ChronicDiseaseDetection #HeartFailure #ChronicDisease

In small towns where the doctor is a neighbor and the hospital anchors the local economy, introducing innovations like AI and virtual care can be especially challenging. Rural critical-access hospitals are exploring these tools to improve care, but progress is often slowed by tight budgets, staffing limitations and a strong sense of community identity. To succeed, healthcare leaders need strategies that prioritize accessibility and meet people where they are, often with a phone call, not a screen. Nearly 50% of U.S. rural hospitals are in the red as reduced reimbursements, dwindling access to care, and deteriorating population health strain rural healthcare systems, new research from The Chartis Center for Rural Health reveals. As rural hospitals close, communities are left without access to much-needed services, leading to the creation of care deserts—areas with significant shortages of healthcare professionals, forcing people to travel greater distances for care, even in emergencies. At Peerbridge Health, we are committed to providing cost-effective remote monitoring solutions that enable timely and accurate diagnosis, improve patient outcomes, and help reduce the strain on healthcare systems. https://lnkd.in/g5pFYmrv I #RuralHealthcare #RuralHospitals #HospitalClosures #RemotePatientMonitoring #VirtualCare #DigitalHealth TechTarget News

Digital health adoption is rapidly increasing, as new research reveals that 58% of Americans used virtual care in the past year. But how people engage with digital health varies significantly across age groups. Rock Health analyzed data from its 2024 Consumer Adoption of Digital Health Survey to better understand how different generations, from Gen Z to the Silent Generation, are using digital health tools and services. Key highlights: 👉 Gen Z feels comfortable using technology to explore health-related topics, with 60% using virtual care in the past 12 months. 👉 Millennials are digital health power users, having come of age during the rise of digital businesses. Sixty-eight percent used virtual care in the past year, exceeding the survey average. 👉 Gen Xers use digital health in a more pragmatic way, often seeking convenience and efficiency. 👉 Nearly half (48%) of Baby Boomers used virtual care in the past year, and 36% own a smartwatch or connected device. 👉 The Silent Generation manages complex care, often with the assistance of caregivers, and tracks health metrics more than any other generation (88%). A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that medications for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease are underused globally, with significant gaps in both high- and low-income countries, leaving many patients likely undertreated. The Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study reveals a decline in medication use over 12 years, particularly in high-income nations, while lower-income countries show inconsistent usage. Researchers emphasize that current strategies for secondary CVD prevention are failing to reach many patients across different economic levels. They suggest that additional approaches are needed to complement existing efforts and improve long-term cardiovascular disease management. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that cardiovascular deaths are rising faster among 25- to 64-year-olds and declining slower among people 65 and older in rural areas compared with those in urban areas. "A lot of the rural divide occurs because there are disparities that come down to differences in access to care," said John Catanzaro, chief of the cardiology division at East Carolina Health Medical Center. While heart disease is rising in rural areas, experts like Catanzaro stress that prioritizing health is possible anywhere. Portion control, quitting smoking, and daily physical activity can all help. Getting outside, walking, and moving can lower calorie intake and reduce heart disease risk, no matter where you live.
