Catching up post the Skoll World Forum – one of my favorite weeks of the year thanks to the dense concentration of brilliant changemakers in the historic town of Oxford. It was helpful to be in a town that is over a thousand years old as we tried to put in perspective the unique time we are living in and think through how we continue to make progress on the most pressing issues of our time. Sharing a few quotes that captured the tone of the conversation: · “We are in a retreat from multilateralism and the post WWII consensus. Things have changed from the G8 Gleneagles meeting in 2005, when everyone was trying to compete to see who could do more.” - Nick Kristof, New York Times · “This can’t be a continuation of work to date – we have to pivot, innovate” – Marla Blow, incoming CEO, Skoll Foundation · “With perseverance you can rebuild a different future. . .Now is the time to reimagine a new order.” – Shamil Idriss, CEO, Search for Common Ground A highlight was seeing the Community Health Impact Coalition receive the Skoll Award for Social Innovation. Huge kudos to Dr. Madeleine Ballard, Margaret Odero, Carey Westgate and all of the CHIC partners! I also enjoyed having the chance to moderate a panel on “Investing in Movements, Coalitions and Networks” with Sunyoung (Sonia) P. Park, Managing Director, Namati; Chris Jochnick, CEO, Landesa; and Sobel Aziz NGOM, incoming CEO of Tostan. It was a robust discussion on the importance of investing in collective action, not just individual organizations, especially in times of crisis. The panelists spoke about how time-consuming it is to create effective coalitions, but all believed that the work paid off over time. As always, the best thing about the week is spending time with long-time colleagues and meeting new ones.
