Even though new medications have the potential to save hours of life suffering by offering amazing benefits, we still have to remember to keep educated about the data as new potential side effects appear. Everything that we recommend to our patients starts with a conversation about benefits and known risks. Caution Advised: Due to the potential link, caution is advised for patients with Raynaud's phenomenon or a history of microvascular disease when considering CGRP antagonist therapy. Patients with hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) experience pain earlier, more persistently, and across more body regions than other chronic pain patients (Lindholm et al.). Despite lower pain intensity, they face greater limitations in daily life—especially with social, leisure, and household activities. Here are some ways we as APPs can support the needs of this unique patient population: 1. Early Diagnosis & Team-Based Care Collaborate with rheumatology, PT, and behavioral health early and often. 2. Individualized PT Plans Focus on joint stability, proprioception, and injury prevention. 3. Psychosocial Support CBT, education, and validation go a long way. 4. Integrative Therapies Yoga, massage, and mindfulness can support physical and emotional well-being. 5. Strong Patient Relationships Trust and continuity matter. Meet them where they are.
