Oswego County News Now recently interviewed our new museum assistant, Jacob Maloney, about his experiences working in the museum world and what drew him to the Richardson-Bates House Museum. We're incredibly honored and lucky to have him join the team. Knowing he has pretty big shoes to fill, he's already making great strides in the new role! Through my educational experience so far I have been able to learn about different cultures and people who also have a system working against them. I believe education is so essential to other people who are not aware of these systems. I am currently researching the Haudenosaunee tribe also known as the Iroquois. One of the many Indigenous tribes who have been oppressed and forced into assimilation. Many people do not know that they had complex systems of political governing and they had their way of educating and teaching their young. With my research, I am so proud to be able to expose these things because of the issues still faced today and erasure caused for indigenous tribes like the Haudenosaunee. At the Richardson Bates House Museum, I am redesigning one of the exhibits to make sure that there is more information about who they are.

The Oswego County Historical Society and the Richardson-Bates House Museum kicked off our 2024 season this April with a brand new website! Beginning in September 2023, our small volunteer subcommittee embarked on a project to rebuild the website as part of larger strategic efforts for the Society. This was no small ask for a volunteer group, especially considering we scoped an ambitious deadline by wanting it ready for our 2024 season opening! I helmed the work from a creative director role, while board president Mary Kay Stone, staff member Evelyn Frederiksen, and volunteer Diana Dean all did an incredible combination of defining site architecture, sourcing all-new material and writing new content, proofreading, and learning the WordPress Gutenberg editor to construct pages themselves. Oh, and all this was happening while we were switching web hosts to Team V Technology in Cicero. The result is a beautiful website where you can plan your visit to the Richardson-Bates House Museum, donate, explore our online collections, or learn more about Oswego County history, all in a few clicks. Once again, with a bit of design acumen, the Society is setting the standard for what other local nonprofit websites could look and feel like. Read my Behind The Scenes post where I go even deeper into the specific goals of the site, and how it all came to be (and then poke around the new site and stay awhile!): https://lnkd.in/eRGiuuJi #historymatters #oswego #webdesign #nonprofit
