"If it's not an F yes, it's an F no." You don't want to be in the final round with a candidate and realize it's not a great fit. Even worse when you realize you could have discovered that two interviews and three weeks ago. Matt Watson knows this firsthand. After starting his career on Wall Street at Citigroup, he left to start a tech company in San Francisco. When that business succeeded and sold, Matt had a financial revelation. He discovered the stark divide in financial services: "wealthy people get great things and if you're not super affluent you don't." This inspired him to create Origin, a financial management platform that's "like a private bank for everybody." But building this vision required the right team. Matt's approach to hiring is refreshingly binary: "Ideally you're meeting a ton of people. That's what we want to do. But as you move into that second meeting with three or four people on the team... that's where you really have to say, are we seeing this early? And if it's not an F yes, it's an F no." Matt tries to design his funnel to do two things, in order: - Bring in a lot of qualified candidates at the top - Filter relentlessly after that If they still end up with candidates who aren't the right fit in final rounds, they re-evaluate their rubric to see where they went wrong. This is an approach I wish more companies would adopt. Treating their interview process just like they treat their products - adapting, improving, measuring. Check out more from my conversation with Matt on why Origin is a great place to work.

Markets have taken a beating recently — here’s what’s going on and what to keep in mind (from our biweekly personal finance newsletter, The Gist): Since the brief correction in 2022, investors have experienced a stretch of near-euphoric market performance — the S&P 500 gained 141% from March 2020 to December 2024. But after multiple years of 20%+ returns, a cool-off felt inevitable. After Trump announced a slate of sweeping tariffs last week, markets had their worst stretch in five years, shedding over $6 trillion in just two days. Now, economists warn of dual, intersecting problems: a recession, and inflation back up to 4% by the end of the year. While it's a tough environment for investors, it’s worth remembering: 1️⃣ Bear markets are painful (average drop: 36%) but temporary (average length: 289 days). Bull markets return 114% on average and win out in the long run. 2️⃣ The right thing to do right now when it comes to your investments? Nothing — as hard as it might sound. 3️⃣ If you’re wary of putting new money in the market right now, consider cash. Interest rates are still relatively elevated. With Tax Day quickly approaching, many Americans have yet to file their taxes. This year, however, tax season is about more than procrastination. Amid growing concerns over a potential recession, rising tariffs, and persistent inflation, many Americans who expect a tax refund this year (41%)—particularly Gen Z (62% ages 18-28)—are planning to doom spend their tax refunds. That is, using most or all of that money for retail therapy as a way to alleviate the stress of economic instability. Read more about this trend on our latest blog post ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gEtFydJV
