NEWS: Orano awarded contract to perform transfer of used nuclear fuel into reactor site’s existing vertical dry storage casks. 🏆 Orano’s reliable pool-to-pad expertise was key to selection for transfer of used nuclear fuel into 14 vertical dry storage systems. Orano was awarded a contract by a southern U.S. nuclear energy facility to perform the transfer of used nuclear fuel assemblies from wet storage in holding pools to dry storage in existing onsite vertical cask systems. This pool-to-pad transfer is scheduled to be completed in early 2025. “We appreciate this opportunity to showcase our Orano team’s proven pool-to-pad expertise applied to vertical storage cask systems,” said Rebecca Stewart, president of Orano TN Americas. “Orano loading crews have transferred more than 61,600 used nuclear fuel assemblies into horizontal and vertical dry storage at more than 30 U.S. reactor sites without incident and achieved more than 80 consecutive loadings on schedule and on budget.” “Along with experiencing how our Orano teams deliver on our commitments, we also find that customers value how we do our work and how we strive to exceed expectations,” said Jean-Luc Palayer, president and CEO of Orano USA. “As part of the competitive bid process, we were pleased to provide prior customers’ testimonials highlighting our performance transparency, team approach, and the trust earned in our business performance and relationships.” The sequential loading of used nuclear fuel assemblies into 14 canisters will occur in the reactors’ storage pools. After removing the moisture, each loaded, sealed canister will be placed inside the site’s reusable vertical transfer cask and moved to the onsite Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI). On the ISFSI interim storage pad, the canister will be placed and secured inside a vertical dry storage overpack. We're pleased that Orano USA CEO Jean-Luc Palayer could support this important House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus discussion with a panel presentation. The example of Orano's selection of a former Manhattan Project site in Oak Ridge for developing the multibillion-dollar #ProjectIKE uranium enrichment facility speaks directly to the value gained from cleanup efforts by DOE-EM and UCOR, plus the important vision by Caucus members and state and regional leadership. DOE drives nuclear innovation at House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus event! Around 100 people attended a recent U.S. House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus event where EM Senior Advisor Roger Jarrell spoke about transforming liabilities into assets for a nuclear future. Co-chairs U.S. Reps. Chuck Fleischmann and Susie Lee were joined by U.S. Rep. Bill Foster and industry leaders. See: https://lnkd.in/ex3pjabS

Which U.S. president launched this program – Atoms for Peace? The program’s intent was to share nuclear technology and isotopes with American allies while maintaining control of weapons-grade material. It also supplied equipment and information to schools, hospitals and research institutions within the U.S. Check the comments tomorrow for the answer! #AtomicHistory

On #AprilFoolsDay, don't be "myth-taken" about nuclear energy! Facts are: 🔋 Nuclear fuel is a small, ceramic pellet, not green goo 🔒 Used fuel in dry storage or transport = 50+ years without any harm ☁️ Cooling tower puffs are warm water vapor, not pollution ♻️ More than 90% of used nuclear fuel is recyclable 😍 77% of Americans support using nuclear energy See list below for info sources. 💯 Resources: 🔋 https://lnkd.in/gbGXNHEF 🔒 https://lnkd.in/ePCjJNfn ☁️ https://lnkd.in/gcj-sqde ♻️ https://lnkd.in/gk-5hWiu 😍 https://lnkd.in/g-zRBp7u #nuclearenergy #nuclearwaste #nuclearfuel

When used nuclear fuel storage casks are opened up, what did EPRI find out? 👀 🌟 In all instances, fuel condition was comparable to pre-loading condition, indicative of an absence of deleterious conditions during dry storage. 🔎 Inspection of casks have also found them to be in good condition after the storage period. 🦾 Where fuel assemblies were transferred back to the pool from dry storage at Peach Bottom, no adverse conditions due to the fuel undergoing a transition from wet-to-dry-to-wet storage were found on subsequent inspection. 🔒 The inspection of fuel and storage casks following the earthquake and subsequent tsunamis that submerged the casks within the storage facility at Fukushima Daiichi found both fuel and casks to be in comparable condition to pre-event inspections. More Argonne National Laboratory innovation for recycling used nuclear fuel! ♻️ "... due to their small size and range of functions, [rotating packed bed (RPB) contactors] can be used at multiple manufacturing or nuclear energy sites. This can significantly reduce the size, safety and cost barriers traditionally associated with nuclear fuel recycling." #itsonlywasteifyouwasteit ⚛️ https://lnkd.in/eV_naewP Office of Nuclear Energy | U.S. Department of Energy Case School of Engineering at Case Western Reserve University #CWRU

During yesterday’s panel at the House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus, Orano USA CEO Jean-Luc Palayer spoke to: 📈 The significant value created by DOE-EM and UCOR’s efficient site remediation in drawing Orano’s multibillion-dollar investment to build the Project IKE uranium enrichment facility in Oak Ridge, TN. 🙂 The crucial support at all levels of federal, state, and regional leadership to create the welcoming business and community environments for nuclear energy companies to locate in East Tennessee. ⚛️ Orano's shared mission with the DOE to meet America’s increasing need for a reliable, secure supply of domestic enriched uranium today with Project IKE near the now renewed site of the old enrichment facility in the same way K-25 met America’s needs years ago. 👉 The key wrap-up point: With 60 years in the U.S. and more than 40 years reliably supplying American utilities with enriched uranium fuel, #Orano is eager to be part of re-energizing the restored property of the old Manhattan Project and to re-establish Oak Ridge as a domestic uranium enrichment center for America’s nuclear energy resurgence. We look forward to working to making this happen with many of the key persons in the room, including Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, Rep. Susie Lee, Rep. Bill Foster, DOE-NE Ted J. Garrish, NEI Maria Korsnick, Roane County Executive Wade Creswell, ETEC Tracy Boatner, Oak Ridge Corridor Michael Magill, and co-panelists DOE-EM Sr. Advisor Roger Jarrell, UCOR President Kenneth Rueter, Oklo Jacob DeWitte, and Centrus Amir Vexler.
