I was deeply inspired learning about Opportunity International’s efforts to support smallholder farmers in Malawi at the Global Nonprofit Leaders Summit last month. Roughly 80% of Malawi’s population relies on small-scale farming for their livelihoods. In 2023, Cyclone Freddy hit Southern Malawi, causing severe floods and landslides that displaced over 560,000 people and devastated crops. Many farmers lost everything. To address these challenges, Opportunity International is empowering vulnerable farmers through financial services, training, and support to help them build sustainable futures. With over 47 partners in more than 20 countries, they scale innovative solutions that help families thrive. In their efforts to improve agricultural practices in the country, Opportunity International is leveraging Microsoft AI tools through their chatbot, Ulangizi. This chatbot strengthens Farmer Support Agents (FSAs) and promotes sustainable agriculture practices. By investing in AI, Opportunity International expects to reduce training costs for new FSAs by more than two-thirds, enabling faster education and empowerment for millions of farmers. To learn more about this incredible organization, join the Global Nonprofit Leaders Summit Watch Party on April 16th, presented by Microsoft for Nonprofits, and catch keynotes and discussions, including “Driving Innovation and Impact in the Global South” by Ama Akuamoah from Opportunity International and Strive Masiyiwa from Econet Group: https://lnkd.in/gEaVyxbH
