America's largest and only coast to coast hardwood lumber producer.

About us

No one knows hardwoods like NWH. We began in the Pacific Northwest with a single alder mill in 1967. Over the years, the company has steadily grown and expanded to become the largest manufacturer and global supplier of hardwood lumber, producing 14+ species of domestic hardwood. Today we also import and distribute a variety of exotic hardwood species, and source both appearance and structural plywood. As a manufacturer and supplier of products made from natural resources, it is our responsibility to make sure those resources are protected and responsibly managed. Both your customers and our business demand nothing less. We do our part by actively pursuing the strictest sourcing and resource management practices. North American Hardwoods are among the most plentiful and well-managed natural resources in the world. Hardwood forests naturally regenerate themselves and do not require planting. The preferred method of harvesting is single-tree selection. This provides a sustainable supply and ensures the overall health of the forest including water quality, wildlife habitat, and biodiversity. As a result, the volume of hardwoods has more than doubled since 1950.

🌳🌱 Arbor Day and the Alder Seedling Journey: A Greener Future 🌳🌱 🌳 Arbor Day is a celebration of trees—a day to plant, nurture, and honor the vital role trees play in our lives. It’s a reminder that every tree contributes to cleaner air, healthier soils, and richer biodiversity. 🌱Our 2025 Alder Seedling Program embodies this spirit. This year, with the help of our dedicated community, 35,000 Alder seedlings were planted across the Pacific Northwest, bringing our total to 70,000 when combined with the 2024 program. Each seedling is a promise for a healthier, greener, better tomorrow.💚 As we celebrate Arbor Day, let’s reflect on the journey of these young Alders—from tiny seeds to mighty trees, to heirloom furniture or gorgeous knotty alder cabinets—and consider sharing your stories or photos of your seedlings in the comments. Together, we are nurturing nature and shaping a legacy of environmental stewardship. #AlderSeedlingProgram #SustainableForestry #ForestDiversity #PacificNorthwest #ArborDay

A reminder that everything we build, design, and create starts with what the Earth gives us. 🌎 It’s a day to reflect—but also to act. To choose materials that last. To support practices that restore. To protect the forests, water, and air we all rely on. At NWH, we’re proud to play a part—and we invite others to join us in building a more sustainable future, one decision at a time. Happy Earth Day to all! 🌳🌎💚 Photos Courtesy of Crystal Cabinet Works and James & James #EarthDay #EarthDay2025 #EarthDayEveryDay

Why Proper, Regular Forest Maintenance Is Critical to Prevent Wildfire Catastrophes🔥 🌳 Proactive Stewardship, Not Reactive Measures Well-maintained forests are less susceptible to catastrophic wildfires. Strategic thinning, removal of underbrush, and responsible harvesting can all reduce the “fuel” on the forest floor. Proper forest stewardship also means addressing invasive species and diseased trees that increase fire risk. Rather than reacting when flames start, we must invest in the systematic care of our woodlands year-round. 🌳 Sustaining the Economy and Environment Forests are the source of essential economic activity—from construction and furniture-making to tourism and recreation. Yet these forests offer far more than wood or scenic trails: they maintain biodiversity, purify our air, and store carbon, serving as a natural defense against climate change. Neglecting them jeopardizes countless industries and communities. 🌳 A Commitment to Long-Term Viability At NWH, we understand that sustaining our forests takes concerted effort. We work closely with local foresters to implement sustainable harvesting practices and reforestation initiatives. By carefully balancing responsible usage with the well-being of forest ecosystems, we help ensure these natural resources will continue to support economic growth and ecological stability for generations to come. Proper forest maintenance is not merely a best practice—it is an essential shield against catastrophe. As suppliers, partners, and neighbors, we stand by the conviction that caring for our forests today is the surest way to prevent tomorrow’s calamities. #WildfirePrevention #SustainableHarvesting #ForestMaintenance

Gat Creek, a high-end furniture maker, has replaced its catalyzed lacquer finish with a 2K urethane system after more than a year of testing and development. The new finish is significantly more durable—offering better resistance to moisture, wear, and yellowing—while also being free of formaldehyde and other hazardous emissions. This upgrade boosts product longevity and clarity while enhancing the natural look and feel of the wood. This shift signals a broader trend toward more advanced, environmentally responsible finishing technologies in the woodworking and furniture industry. Gat Creek’s move shows that it's possible to adopt a finish that’s both more durable and more sustainable without sacrificing quality or beauty. For companies that both design and manufacture (like Gat Creek), it highlights the value of investing in finish innovation—not just for performance, but also to align with evolving environmental and health standards. It’s a nudge to others that the future of finishing is likely cleaner, tougher, and more transparent—literally and figuratively. Read More: https://bit.ly/3Gbd17S

At NWH, we believe in the power of natural materials to transform spaces—and lives. Matt Cheadle's insightful white paper, "Natural Harmony: Solid Wood’s Role in a Neurodiverse World," highlights exactly why we value using hardwoods to create inclusive and comforting environments. The calming qualities of wood—its warmth, inviting textures, and organic beauty—perfectly align with our commitment to well-being and thoughtful material choices. Recognizing the profound impact that spaces have on individuals experiencing neurodiversity, such as autism or dementia, we celebrate the integration of natural hardwood furniture. Solid wood helps foster calm, enhance focus, and reduce sensory overload. Cheadle's research supports our commitment to enabling sustainable design solutions that promote cognitive comfort and emotional balance, reminding us that design with deeper meaning truly benefits everyone. It's clear that hardwoods are more than just materials; they’re essential components in environments where everyone can feel comfortable and thrive. By providing these materials, we contribute to creating spaces that welcome and support all individuals. We're grateful to Matt Cheadle and Mantra Inspired Furniture for sharing these insights. We highly recommend checking out the white paper for more inspiration on designing spaces that support everyone: https://lnkd.in/gETse_Mh Photo: Gat Creek #WoodIsGood #ChooseHardwoods #SustainableLiving #EcoFriendlyDesign #HealthyLifestyle
