In a first-of-its-kind surgery for #LongIsland, the Northwell Health Transplant Institute performed a successful three-organ transplant on Sergio Arias Cestoni who was in various stages of heart, liver and kidney failure.
Mr. Cestoni was diagnosed with ischemic cardiomyopathy in 2018 and had been on the heart and kidney transplant waiting lists for two years, and began to see his liver function erode from the impact of cirrhosis. Transforming OR waste into a sustainable future. ♻️ We are proud to be leading the way in hospital sustainability with an innovative recycling program in our operating rooms.
Launched at the Center for Advanced Medicine, this initiative captures clean, recyclable materials before surgeries begin—diverting up to 50% of OR waste from landfills. Through a collaboration with Caracal Products & Services and WM Stericycle, we’re turning sterile packaging into new products like plastic bags, caps, and gowns.
The program is expanding to North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, with a systemwide rollout to all 250+ ORs by September. Together, we’re making a lasting impact—one procedure at a time.
