On March 19 2025, through The Disaster Recovery Act of 2025 – Part I (S.L. 2025-2), the North Carolina General Assembly established the Agricultural Disaster Crop Loss Program, a one-time assistance program for agricultural producers who suffered verifiable losses from any declared agricultural disaster in 2024. Produers have until May 4th to apply for funding through this program. Of the $311 million available, $200 million will be for verifiable losses from Hurricane Helene in the affected area and about $111 million will be for verifiable losses from all other agricultural disasters in 2024. Entrepreneur Tonya Council of Tonya’s Cookies & Bake Shop is bringing even more Southern flavors to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with the opening of Tonya’s Cafe on Wednesday, March 19. Located at 400 South Elliott Road, Tonya’s Cafe serves lunch during the week and brunch on weekends. Dishes include a cornbread flight, smothered pork chops, chicken fried steak, po’boys, sweet potato souffle, and more. “This cafe is something I’ve wanted to bring to Chapel Hill for a long time,” says Tonya. “There’s a need here for a space that celebrates traditional Southern flavors in a relaxed, family-friendly environment. Expanding the bake shop is a dream come true, and I’m so excited to share it with this wonderful community.” Tonya is the granddaughter of Southern food icon Mildred Council, better known as Mama Dip. Tonya grew up watching her grandmother cook and helped out by cracking pecans for pecan pies, which gave her the idea to make pecan crisp cookies. Misty Terry, the program lead of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's Youth Innovators Empowering Agriculture Across America program, is creating real connections for 4-H’ers. More than 100 mentors are showing that you don’t have to grow up on a farm to work in agriculture.
