Community-Based Sustainable Development
About us
New Ecology addresses global environmental issues by bringing the benefits of sustainable development to the community level with a concerted emphasis on equity. We make the built environment more efficient, healthy, and resilient by advancing sustainable practices, ensuring accessible, affordable, and healthy environments in which to live and work. As a nonprofit organization with 25 years of experience in affordable housing and sustainable developments, New Ecology advances programs that meet the needs of residents and communities while reducing carbon impacts. Our Green Building Services team advances the impact of sustainable development in new affordable multifamily housing by helping developers and their teams construct these residential or mixed-use buildings in a way that is healthy, affordable, resilient, and accessible to the communities they serve. Our Existing Building Decarbonization team transforms existing housing stock by working with owners and operators of multifamily affordable housing to pursue practical strategies for building decarbonization over time, reducing impacts and controlling costs while increasing sustainability. Our Climate Smart Communities program catalyzes local community development initiatives to deliver not only affordable housing and opportunities to build equity, but homes that offer improved indoor air quality and which are designed and built to withstand what we expect from our changing climate. We also have a Research and Development initiative that innovates and creates new opportunities for technologies, processes, and approaches that can make sustainable development in the built environment more efficient, cost-effective, and impactful. www.newecology.org

🌟 Welcome to Beacon House Square, an adaptive reuse project in Baltimore City that has been many years in the making.🌟 It is comprised of two historic church buildings, the oldest dating to 1893. The property will be repurposed into 80 units of permanent supportive housing and emergency shelter for Project PLASE (People Lacking Ample Shelter and Employment), in partnership with Beacon Communities LLC. As part of the renovation the project is pursuing Enterprise Green Communities and ENERGY STAR Multifamily New Construction certification via the ASHRAE compliance pathway. This is no mean feat for an existing masonry building that will retain many of its historic features. Senior Energy Rater Alexander Haworth recently visited the site. "It was great to meet the team, walk the site with demo ongoing, and begin to identify some of the secrets and challenges that even the best made architectural drawings can never fully capture or anticipate. Beautiful building, beautiful purpose. I hope to document more in the months to come as construction progresses."
