Advancing family caregiving through research, advocacy, and innovation
About us
Established in 1996, The National Alliance for Caregiving is a non-profit coalition of national organizations focusing on issues of family caregiving. The Alliance was created to conduct research, do policy analysis, develop national programs, increase public awareness of family caregiving issues, work to strengthen state and local caregiving coalitions, and represent the US caregiving community internationally. Recognizing that family caregivers provide important societal and financial contributions toward maintaining the well-being of those they care for, the Alliance’s mission is to be the objective national resource on family caregiving with the goal of improving the quality of life for families and care recipients.

Today, family caregivers provide over $600 billion in unpaid labor to keep loved ones at home and out of institutional care — and many are doing it with the vital support of Medicaid. If Medicaid is cut, we risk collapsing the system that allows millions of older adults, people with disabilities, and chronically ill individuals to remain in their homes and communities. Caregivers like Ty Lewis would lose access to home care, respite support, and essential financial resources — all while trying to maintain employment and housing. We're calling on Congress to protect this essential lifeline. Add your voice to the fight. Take action now: https://lnkd.in/eUfQz5NX #HandsOffMedicaid #CaregiverNation

Today is Parkinson’s Awareness Day — a moment to recognize the millions living with Parkinson’s Disease and the family caregivers who support them every day. In our recent report, “Parkinson’s Disease: Caregiving in the U.S.”, NAC sheds light on the unique emotional, financial, and logistical challenges faced by caregivers. Our findings were recently featured in McKnight's Senior Living, underscoring the implications for families and the broader care system. Key stats from the report: 🔸 60%+ of caregivers have been providing care for over a year 🔸 47% provide memory-related support 🔸 50% balance caregiving with full-time employment 🔸 35% say they need more resources to keep loved ones safe at home 🔸 43% need better support for their own stress and health This Parkinson’s Awareness Day — and every day — we’re advocating for the policies and systems that uplift caregivers and strengthen our nation’s care infrastructure. Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget resolution that kicks off consideration of a proposal to deeply cut Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — critical programs that family caregivers across America depend on to support their loved ones. These cuts would harm countless families who rely on Medicaid for essential healthcare services and SNAP benefits to ensure proper nutrition for those in their care. Deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP would devastate the families who rely on them. Family caregivers already do so much with so little — we must protect the programs that make caregiving possible. Our CEO Jason Resendez joined a Capitol Hill briefing on April 7 hosted by Representatives Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Congressman John Moolenaar (R-MI) to spotlight the rising costs of long-term care and the urgent need for policy solutions supporting family caregivers. They recently introduced the WISH Act (Well-Being Insurance for Seniors to Be at Home Act H.R. 2082) that offers a path forward, providing financial assistance to eligible older adults, improving health outcomes, and strengthening support for family caregivers. Our President & CEO Jason Resendez penned a letter in STAT highlighting how proposed Medicaid cuts would harm the very people who hold up our nation’s care system - family caregivers and direct care workers. Medicaid is essential to making care work - for families, communities, and our economy. Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/epKafbsk #Medicaid #Healthcare #Caregiving #CaregiverNation

We deeply sympathize with the dedicated public servants whose essential work has supported caregivers and families across the country. Their invaluable contributions have had a profound impact, and these layoffs will be felt across the entire caregiving ecosystem. My heart goes out to the public servants, now displaced, whose vital work protected the health and well-being of all Americans. Thank you for everything you have done to support our caregiver nation. The repercussions of these layoffs will reverberate through the very core of our caregiver support systems, impacting service delivery, innovation, research and approvals of breakthrough therapies, and vital benefits. Combined, civil servants across government made caregiving—some of the hardest work possible—just a little less hard. We cannot afford to weaken these supports now. Read the National Alliance for Caregiving statement is here: https://lnkd.in/esJU6cAB I am profoundly grateful to the government workers, members of Congress, and organizations who are raising their voices right now in support of care. As Seamus Heaney wrote, "Believe that further shore Is reachable from here."
