A new feature on MycoWorks fronts the Radar section of Italy’s Il Fatto Quotidiano. Ilaria Mauri writes: “Bags, belts, jackets, pants, but also sofas and car interiors: in a not too distant future all of this will be made of mushrooms. No, it’s not a science fiction novel but the reality of the infinite possibilities of Reishi, a material that grows in a few weeks, moldable into infinite shapes, resistant like leather, but without the environmental impact of intensive farming or the dependence on plastic.” ➡️ Read the feature: https://lnkd.in/gDr9wv2K

This week in UC Berkeley's Seminar in Bioprocess Engineering, our students welcomed Maud Ohler of MycoWorks for a memorable session on growing the future of materials. Based in nearby Emeryville, MycoWorks produces bio-based materials from mycelium - the dense, filamentous growth that forms the "roots" of mushrooms. Mycelial biomass can be grown rapidly on low-cost agricultural waste with very little land or water, making it far more environmentally friendly than petroleum- or animal-based alternatives. And its versatility in form, functionality, and finishing make it further attractive for use in applications ranging from fabrication to fashion. As one example, MycoWorks' Reishi Fine Mycelium offers a natural and beautiful replacement for bovine leather. Maud took our students deep into how MycoWorks makes its Reishi biomaterial by cultivating the mycelium network of fungi, from feedstock selection & solid-state fermentation to harvest & finishing of Fine Mycelium. Connecting bio-based process to product, Maud also highlighted the unique durability, customization, performance & sustainability that define the Reishi consumer experience - for the eyes, hands, and even the nose! To this end, Maud brought a few sample sheets into our classroom so that our students could also see, touch, feel, smell, and experience it for themselves :) As an added bonus, Maud spent a few minutes on her personal mindset for success in the biotech industry. First off, classroom learning, hands-on training & technical skills provide critical preparation to begin your career; however character, communication & collaboration lay the foundation for long-term success. Second, growth is a continuous journey - your mindset matters! Curiosity, humility & self-awareness drive progress, and active listening is often more powerful than speaking. Third, life is FULL of opportunities - make thoughtful plans, but keep your eyes open... Finally, resilience is key - challenges will come, but perseverance will set you apart! A BIG THANKS (!!!) to Maud and MycoWorks for sharing your next-generation materials story (and growth mindset!) with the next generation of bioprocess scientists & engineers at UC Berkeley! GO BEARS!!! 🐻💙💛 UC Berkeley Master of Bioprocess Engineering #ucberkeley #biobased #biomanufacturing #biomaterials #biotechnology #bioprocessing #fermentation #mycelium
