About us
MKSK is a collective of Planners, Urban Designers, and Landscape Architects, founded in 1990, who are passionate about the interaction between people and place. We are an employee-owned practice with a network of twelve metropolitan studios in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, New York and the District of Columbia. MKSK works to solve the pressing issues in our cities and communities, and build places where people want to live. We work with communities and clients to reimagine, plan, and design dynamic environments for the betterment of all. MKSK approaches planning and design with a clear understanding that each place is unique and has economic, social, environmental, historical, and cultural influences which should be explored through thoughtful, context sensitive design. We help communities and our clients meet the challenges of changing global conditions through the MKSK LAB for Climate and Biodiversity Resilience. We shape place to improve lives, and we share our transformational stories and the power of strong planning and design to inspire ourselves, our peers, and the world to work together for the common good. Together we plan and design a world in which we all want to live.

MKSK, Louisville | Studio Works Royal Oak Centennial Commons fills a much-needed void as the only urban open space for the community as a social and cultural hub. The park operates as ecological infrastructure with significant tree canopy and green stormwater management. A “Glade” within the urban core, this space now serves as a daily destination for residents and a venue for large community events. A centrally located event lawn offers space for people to gather comfortably while also serving as the location for the city’s ice rink during the winter months. A perimeter pathway meanders through familiar and native landscapes like the Oak Grove and the community gardens, and it reveals history of the area’s indigenous people and the evolution of the City of Royal Oak. MKSK, Louisville | Studio Works Imagination Alley constructed in 2021, is a 6,000 sf pocket park in the heart of the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio. The site, characterized by overgrown vegetation and once a hotspot for less-than-desired activity over recent years, has now been transformed to become a neighborhood green space for community events and public gatherings. With goals derived from a robust and creative community outreach process, the design team was given clear key objectives and metrics to help create a successful transformation of the derelict park, including providing better lighting, more art, additional seating, lush green spaces, and developing flexible event spaces. The finished pocket park has become the jewel of the neighborhood with residents and visitors from adjacent businesses utilizing the park daily during lunches and afternoons as well as community members holding impromptu barbecues and movie nights in the alley. Neighbors and community members alike are celebrating this new addition with its public art installations, pop up markets, and enjoying the natural beauty of cultivated landscapes and green walls within this newly established urban oasis.
