MIT Sloan’s former dean, David Schmittlein, has passed away after an extended illness. Not only was he an incredible leader, but he was also a mentor, a teacher, and a friend who brought the school to new heights during his 17-year tenure. We will miss him very much.

The winner of the The MIT Press 2025 Alumni Book Award is "The Abundant University: Remaking Higher Education for a Digital World" (2023), by Michael D. Smith, PhD ’00, who earned his MIT Sloan School of Management doctorate in management science and is now the J. Erik Jonsson Professor of Information Technology and Marketing at Carnegie Mellon University. "The Abundant University" is a wake-up call for elite institutions and a visionary roadmap for the future of higher education. "It's an honor to receive this award. MIT's Sloan school is where I first studied how technology changes structure and competition in markets. I'm happy to be able to apply that learning to how technology can and should change the market for higher education," says Smith. MIT Provost Cynthia Barnhart, SM ’86, PhD ’88, will present the new Faculty and Alumni Book Awards at a campus celebration today. Read more here: https://bit.ly/42FDEud

The Chalk Radio podcast invites listeners behind the scenes of some of the most interesting courses at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Now in its seventh season, Chalk Radio is bringing you closer to the action than ever before through video. Launched by MIT OpenCourseWare in 2020, Chalk Radio takes a deep dive into how MIT educators teach. Instructors share insights about their courses and how their learning journeys have shaped their research, teaching, and initiatives in their fields. “What’s remained consistent over the years is how much MIT instructors care about solving big problems in the world, how generous they are with their knowledge, and how much they believe in learners’ abilities both on campus and online to lend their own insights to solving these challenges, too," says Sarah Hansen, Chalk Radio’s host and the assistant director of open education innovation at OpenCourseWare. I've been hinting at this for some time now, but it's time for the official announcement: My book (co-authored Don Kieffer) There's Got to Be A Better Way will be released this August! The product of over twenty years of research, teaching, and consulting, it offers proven, practical advice for organizing your work to cut through the noise and focus on what matters. If you have taken a course with me in the last fifteen, you've been part of the process of bringing these ideas to fruition. Many students from the MIT Executive MBA Program play starring roles, and the great work by our friends at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard figures prominently. The book is now available for pre-order at Amazon here: https://bit.ly/4jzMJKM Or, if you prefer other vendors, you can find several options here: https://bit.ly/3FpNPKk If you are interested in a bulk order, please reach out to me directly. Innovation is a process—and it should be repeatable. It's not something you do once or on occasion. Rather, it's something your organization and people should be prepared to engage in continuously. MIT Sloan School of Management senior lecturer Kate W. Isaacs, SM ’07, PhD ’13, and associate dean for innovation Fiona Murray discussed how to build this kind of innovation-ready organization in a recent webinar. The pair will teach in the new Innovation Executive Academy course from MIT Sloan Executive Education. Senior lecturer Dr.Phil Budden, who facilitated the discussion, is the course's executive director. Read more about what Isaacs and Murray recommended doing to set your organization up for innovation here: https://bit.ly/3YjlawT

Today we celebrate the graduation of my 100th doctoral student with some of my current and prior PhD students. If somebody told me that after 37 years as an MIT faculty I would have graduated 100 PhD students, I would have found it unbelievable!
