About us

MSSA is Minnesota's oldest and largest membership organization. Our mission is uniting diverse professions and passionate people through education and legislative advocacy to enrich the lives of Minnesotans. MSSA members are connected to a network of nearly 3000 health and human service professionals and over 150 health and human service agencies spanning all budget sizes and geographic regions of Minnesota and the surrounding states. As the largest state association of health and human service professionals in the U.S., MSSA draws upon the expertise and knowledge of this network to develop programs and services that inform, promote, connect, and strengthen individuals in the nonprofits and for profit sector. Annual Training Conference & Expo: MSSA’s Annual Training Conference & Expo is the largest, most comprehensive, cost effective health and human service conference in the Midwest. It brings together approximately 3,000 health and human service professionals from all parts of the country. With over 100 educational workshops covering a broad spectrum of topics and featuring high quality, local and nationally recognized speakers, MSSA is able to bring to you cutting edge topics on the focus areas important to those in the health and human services field. It provides a unique opportunity for agencies and businesses to share new technologies and programs during the Annual Conference & Expo. Each year, more than 180 organizations showcase their products and meet with conferees. Legislative Program: Our grassroots legislative program is a foundational pillar of MSSA. From members who want to become actively involved, to those who simply want legislative updates, MSSA represents health and human services professionals at the Minnesota State Capitol and knows that a strong, active and influential legislative program is essential to ensuring high quality health and human services.

  • Day in the Life of an MSSA Member! 🌟Sonjae Bass, MS, ABS, ASD ❓Where do you work and what is your job title? REM Ramsey - Positive Support Professional; St. Thomas University - Adjunct Professor ❓Overview of your involvement in the HHS field I am the supervisor for Positive Behavior Supports, within the Community Behavior Supports Division for REM/Sevita Health. As the Positive Support Professional (PSP), I provide clinical oversight & guidance to the Positive Support Analysts (PSA’s). As the Community Behavior Supports team, we push into group homes & community settings to conduct observations, complete assessments, & develop treatment plans for individuals that have a history of engaging in interfering/maladaptive behaviors. I’ve worn many “hats” during my 17 years within the field, such as a Para Educator, Behavior Intervention Specialist, and a Special Education teacher. I’ve also conducted work with Equity & Inclusion in schools to assist in closing the disparity gap. After working from early education through secondary education, I often wondered what happened to students upon leaving or “aging-out” of transitional programs. This led me on a journey of exploring teaching higher education. As a current Adjunct Professor for St. Thomas, I have the pleasure of assisting future educators in gaining foundational knowledge of behavior theories, and a concrete understanding of how to impact behavioral change to maximize academic instruction within the learning space. This journey into “life beyond the classroom” further propelled me into Community Behavior Supports. Helping individuals with varying ability levels, and those that support them, has given me a renewed sense of purpose: a purpose to assist in creating a better quality of life! ❓What drives your passion for your work? There are many things that drive my passion. Some of which include: helping & serving others (especially those that are not always able to do this independently), being a change agent & promoting equity in spaces were it may otherwise be lacking. Behavior & teaching into how behavior works is a part of who I am, so it's not just a job for me. I truly enjoy brainstorming the motivation behind why things may be happening & collaborating on strategies that could prove beneficial in promoting positive change. A perfect moment in time is observing someone completing a task or developing a skill that others once felt would be impossible for them to do, especially when you've had a hand in helping them achieve that success: Priceless!

Client Care Coordinator at Leo A. Hoffmann Center

Attending the MSSA (Minnesota Social Service Association) conference in Minneapolis last week, was an incredible opportunity to represent the Leo A. Hoffmann Center. It was also my first time in attendance! The atmosphere was filled with excitement and the energy of passionate professionals coming together to share their expertise and insights🧠 🌟Presenting & representing the Leo A. Hoffmann Center was a highlight of the event. The opportunity to showcase the efforts and services provided to our youth and adolescents within our PRTF was truly fulfilling, as it allowed me to engage with an audience that shared a deep interest in youth care and treatment. To also showcase the outpatient counseling services we provide to youth, children, and families as well! It was rewarding to see the impact of the message presented. The feedback connections were overwhelmingly positive to showcase our commitment to excellence in mental health care🌟 ✔️Throughout the event, I had the chance to network with like-minded individuals, exchange ideas, and learn from some of the brightest minds and programs in the field. The discussions that followed my presentation were both insightful and thought-provoking, further reinforcing the value of the work we’re servicing to youth and adolescents at the Leo A. Hoffmann Center✔️ ✨Overall, the experience was not just an opportunity to present but also a chance to connect, learn, and grow professionally. The MSSA event in Minneapolis will remain a standout moment in my career, and I look forward to future opportunities to engage with such a dynamic and supportive community!!✨

  • Day in the Life of an MSSA Member! 🌟Shannon Birchard, MSW, LGSW ❓Where do you work and what is your job title? Suicide Prevention Case Manager at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center ❓Overview of your involvement in the HHS field My social work journey officially began in 2020 when I became licensed and provided waiver case management services for Ramsey County residents. Since then, I have received my Masters in social work and have been working for the Minneapolis VA. I service veterans of all ages in rural Minnesota. I have the privilege to work collaboratively with veterans, their mental health team, their family and loved ones, as well as the community. ❓Typical daily schedule As a case manager, every day is unique! I begin each workday with a safety huddle with the Suicide Prevention team and our supervisors. During our huddle, we review potential or existing safety risks to the veterans and staff. Throughout the day, I attend meetings with my interdisciplinary teams that include nurses, psychiatrists, social workers, among other professionals. When I am not in meetings, I complete case management tasks that involve following up on #988 crisis line calls, reviewing and documenting suicide behavior reports, and connecting with the veterans on my caseload. When working with the veterans, we collaborate to create an individualized safety plan for them to utilize. My team and I are also responsible for training in new staff on suicide prevention within the medical center and the outpatient clinics. One of my favorite aspects of this role is that I am able to attend community events to further educate the public on suicide prevention, postvention, lethal means safety, and debunking myths about suicide! Our team provides community outreach at mental health run/walks, local gun/knife shows, and festivals! ❓What drives your passion for your work? From an early age, I knew I wanted to help people. I've had first hand experience where social workers have impacted my life. It is such a privilege to connect with the community. Being able to be a part of someone's healing journey is incredibly rewarding. The following is my absolute favorite quote: "Social work means getting to fully experience the vast richness and the strange, exquisite beauty found in the rawest parts of our human condition" - Natalie Tuffield, LSW

  • Day in the Life of an MSSA Member! 🌟Richelle Kramer, BS, MSW, QDDP, LICSW Social Services Supervisor/Assessment Services, Wright County Health and Human Service ❓Overview of your involvement in the HHS field I have worked for Wright County Health and Human Services since 2001. After being a child foster care licensor for about 8 years, I moved into a developmental disabilities waiver and non-waiver case manager role. Since 2013, I have been a social services supervisor. I developed our agency's first MnCHOICES team in 2014. I sit on Wright County's Adult Treatment court team as the health and human services liaison and a mental health professional. Outside of my role with the county, I previously contracted with DHS as a trainer and taught curriculums around adoption, foster care, child welfare matters, and domestic violence. I currently provide part time licensing supervision and work as a mental health therapist. I have been on the board of Autism Allies and MSSA. In my personal life, I am the court appointed guardian to my adult son who has autism and other mental health challenges. ❓What drives your passion for your work? My journey in meeting the challenging needs of my son drives my passion for this work. From the day he was born, he had challenges both medically and behaviorally. Navigating the social welfare system and accessing the services he was needing has been, and continues to be, extremely challenging. I struggle to navigate the system and I have advanced education and knowledge of the system. My goal is to help make their journey a little bit easier. Minnesota has wonderful support programs and services, but accessing them can be exponentially challenging. We have a duty to offer our constituents meaningful access to the services and supports that exist in this wonderful state. Clients and their representative need to be educated so that they can make informed choice in order to access the best and most appropriate services to meet their needs and those of the ones they love and support.
