College basketball coach Greg Herenda has been attending the NCAA Men’s Final Four since the 1980s, but one trip to the tournament in 2018 became life-changing when he found himself experiencing a medical emergency in San Antonio. Back in town for the 2025 Final Four, Coach Herenda made a special visit to Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan to reconnect with the incredible staff who not only saved his life all those years ago, but gave him the chance to lead his own team to its first NCAA Tournament game win in school history the year following his recovery. Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant held its annual flag-raising ceremony to launch Donate Life Month, a time to celebrate the gift of life and raise awareness about the growing need for organ donors in our community. Currently, more than 100,000 individuals are awaiting organ transplants, according to Donate Life America, with around 6,000 people dying each year while waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. Our hospital relies on the generosity of living donors and donor families. Methodist Transplant Institute’s Living Kidney Donor program has been recognized as the number one program in the nation. Additionally, the kidney paired donation program and the Hispanic kidney transplant program are the largest in the country. Together, we can make a positive impact on the world and save lives.
