Nourishing minds and bodies; empowering families and communities
About us
Mission: Nourishing bodies and minds, empowering families and communities. Values: As a Quaker-affiliated, nonsectarian 501(c)(3) organization, Mercer Street Friends honors the equality of all people and strives for a just, prosperous, and peaceful society for all. We respond to the needs of the community to build alliances that will have the most meaningful impact in addressing issues of poverty. We provide a range of integrated services that build community, nurture self-worth and independence, and offer resources for children, families, and communities to overcome poverty and its lasting effects. Background: Mercer Street Friends was founded in 1958 by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) who were concerned about the decaying Trenton community and its impact on residents. The founding Quaker volunteers responded by renovating a 100-year old meeting house no longer used for worship, located on Mercer Street in the Mill Hill section of Trenton, and turning the facility onto a community center for neighbors. Over the past 6 decades, Mercer Street Friends has grown into a multi-faceted human service agency. Today we serve more than 20,000 families throughout Mercer County who face the challenges and impacts of poverty. Our programs target disparities related to: education, food insecurity, parental and family wellness, youth enrichment opportunities and community-building capacity. Supported by a combination of government, corporate and foundation grants and private donations, Mercer Street Friends has a budget of $5.7 million, a workforce of 70 employees and more than 500 volunteers.

The Tri-County Food Insecurity Index is a vital tool for assessing Mercer County’s needs at a hyper-local level, enabling us to use data-driven insights to better serve our community. Food insecurity remains a major challenge in the greater Trenton area, impacting children, adults, and seniors alike. At Mercer Street Friends, we are committed to addressing this issue head-on, working tirelessly to combat its harmful effects and ensure access to nutritious food for all. This summer, the Fifth Annual Leadership Awards Celebration will honor three outstanding members of our community. Today, we are #spotlighting the Humanitarian Award recipient, Phyllis Stoolmacher. Phyllis dedicated 30 years to Mercer Street Friends, transforming its Food Bank into Mercer County’s primary anti-hunger resource while overseeing operations, fundraising, advocacy, and launching key child hunger programs like Send Hunger Packing (SHUP). She continues to support the Food Bank as a volunteer. THANK YOU, Phyllis for your unwavering dedication to our mission. 💙 Learn more about the Fifth Annual Leadership Awards Celebration: https://bit.ly/3Xy5a9X

Congratulations to our incredible community partner, Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK), on the one-year anniversary of their game-changing "TASK Truck" – a soup kitchen on wheels! This innovative, mobile solution has been bringing nutritious meals directly to those who need them most across the greater Trenton area. Here’s to one year of serving with love and making a real difference – and to many more to come! 🥰
🎉Happy birthday to the TASK Truck!🎂 Today, we celebrated one year of mobile meals by throwing ourselves a party! We set up the truck in front of TASK during lunch service, played music and shared delicious cupcakes from our friends at Eet Gud Bakery. We look forward to sharing more about the TASK Truck throughout this birthday week, but today we want to thank everyone for helping us celebrate such a momentous occasion! We could not do what we do without you!

Congratulations to Carol Voorhees and our friends NJM Insurance Group!
I want to congratulate Mitch Livingston on his outstanding career at NJM Insurance Group. Well before he became CEO, he significantly contributed to the company's strategic direction while ensuring that policyholder service was core to everything NJM did. Mitch was the right person at the right time to take the helm in 2018 and through his unfailing leadership NJM has brought its top rated customer service experience to policyholders across the mid-atlantic region. His are big shoes to fill and I commend Chairman Ned Stern and the NJM Board for selecting Carol Voorhees to fill this important role. Carol is a tremendous leader who inspires her colleagues and is very well suited to lead NJM in the years to come. Congratulations Carol! https://lnkd.in/eDGTHczk
