Obesity is not a moral failure — it's a complex, chronic disease. At American College of Physicians #IM2025, experts urged physicians to leave outdated metrics and stigmas behind. Reed Tuckson, MD, FACP, and Mara Gordon, MD, challenge the reliance on BMI and call for care grounded in trust, equity and science. When health insurance companies deny claims, what's happening behind the scenes? Just dropped an incredible podcast with Medical Economics and Physicians Practice, the premier resources trusted by thousands of independent physicians nationwide! Their platform reaches more doctors making critical practice decisions than almost any other medical publication in America. We discussed the shocking reality that over 90% of denied claims are NEVER appealed - leaving massive revenue uncollected and creating headaches for both doctors and patients. 💔 What else? • Neurologists face denial rates approaching 20%, totally wasting time and leaving them unable to care for patients, especially vulnerable older adults • The average cost to manually appeal is $43.84, forcing physicians practices to lose money and time • Providers spend 12-15 hours weekly fighting denials (no one went to Med School to be an insurance negotiator!) Insurance companies have totally weaponized AI for programmatic denials, creating what I called "asymmetric warfare" against providers. On a positive note, I shared how our AI tools at Counterforce Health are generating industry-leading quality of appeals. Even demo'd our voice AI assistant Maxwell that can handle annoying phone calls with insurers. 🤣 I would LOVE for a shout-out on a health insurers' earnings call this year that has to take over $100 million of losses from what Counterforce Health is doing to help patients get the the care they need! 👊 Until regulators wake up and do something, the only hope is through grassroots innovation and absolutely embarrassing these health insurance companies for what they're doing to patients and doctors. Thanks Chris Mazzolini for the amazing opportunity to share the message with your huge audience!! Listen to the full episode to hear my 3 recommendations for policymakers on fixing the broken denial system. What's your most frustrating health insurance experience?
