The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, often referred to as the MBTA or simply The T, is the public operator of most bus, subway, commuter rail and ferry systems in the greater Boston, Massachusetts, area. The MBTA is the largest transit provider in New England, and the fifth largest in the country. The MBTA directly operates or contracts out for service using eight different modes: heavy rail, light rail, bus rapid transit, local/express bus, trackless trolley, commuter rail, commuter boat, and paratransit. In Boston, 55% of all work trips and 42% of all trips into downtown are made by transit. The MBTA district is made up of 175 communities with a total population of 4.7 million. Almost three-quarters of all Massachusetts residents live within the MBTA service area.

“The MBTA is committed to rebuilding our infrastructure to deliver best-in-class service and ensure accessibility. Alongside our engineering and construction industry partners, we are proud to have been recognized locally and nationally by American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) for the creative design and construction efforts shown at our historic Worcester Union Station building,” said General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. “The team tackled many challenges to make this project a reality. With a problem-solving approach and vital collaboration, we delivered this critical project for Worcester and the entire rail line serving all the communities along this corridor. The national award highlights the success of this project, the teamwork demonstrated throughout design, and the construction to keep the project on track, literally and figuratively. I applaud all as their hard work and outside-the-box thinking is delivering results for the public we serve.”
We're pleased to announce that our Worcester Union Station Accessibility Improvements Project won the 2025 ACEC National Recognition Award and American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) Engineering Excellence Award. “Feedback from our community stakeholders and the public is critical as we develop our five-year CIP, which guides how the MBTA plans critical investments in the system,” said General Manager and CEO Eng. “As we strategically plan to deliver capital projects, improving service, ensuring safety, and serving the needs of today and future generations, I thank the Board of Directors for their thoughtful review, and encourage all riders to engage with us as we continue to build a better T in which we can all take pride.”
Today, we released our Proposed Capital Investment Plan (CIP) for Fiscal Years 2026 - 2030, which we aims to address the changing needs of today as we lay the groundwork for tomorrow.
