April showers bring…improved drought conditions! 🌸💧 Following two months of above normal precipitation, the Connecticut River Valley, Central, Southeast and Western regions of the state have been downgraded to a Level 1 – Mild Drought status. The Northeast region will join the Cape and Islands regions at a Level 2 – Significant Drought. DER participates in the Drought Management Task Force, along with many other state and federal agencies and professional organizations, to collect information and make recommendations for drought management to the Secretary of Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, the Secretary of Public Safety and Security, and the Governor. While this is a promising start, Massachusetts is still in a prolonged drought so businesses and residents should continue to follow state guidance and local water restrictions. This project has been years in the making. We are grateful to Heart of New England Council, Scouting America, the Town of Spencer and many others involved to expand public access to Browning Pond. I especially want to thank Christine Smith, DFG Assistant General Counsel, and Terry Smith, Acting Director for DFG's Office of Fishing and Boating Access for their work to make this possible!
"Everyone deserves access to the ample outdoor recreation opportunities that Massachusetts has to offer. Browning Pond is a special place for fishing in Central Massachusetts, and we’re pleased to play a role in enhancing public access," said Massachusetts Department of Fish & Game Commissioner Tom O'Shea. Thank you to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette for reporting on this exciting opportunity to enhance public access to fishing and boating in partnership with Heart of New England Council, Scouting America. https://lnkd.in/e5qXywdt #OutdoorRecreation #PublicAccess #NatureforAll

In just under a month from now, our Division of Marine Fisheries will begin the annual count of the state's horseshoe crab population. Thanks to an incredible response from the community, we will have no shortage of helping hands this year! 💙 🙌 "In past years, we usually put out an email or put it on Facebook and request volunteers, and we'll get about 50 emails," said DMF Horseshoe Crab Biologist Derek Perry. "This year, within 24 hours of putting up that post, we got 500." https://lnkd.in/ejXjnyCD #HorseshoeCrabMonitoring #Volunteers #ParticipatoryScience

Now that it’s finally spring, wild turkey breeding season is in full swing! 🦃 Through May, you may notice an increase in turkey activity as the males puff out their feathers, fan their tails, and strut while gobbling to attract a mate. It isn’t all song and dance though as wild turkeys are trying to establish their pecking order and may be aggressive towards people they view as subordinates. Aggressive behavior towards humans occurs most often in areas where turkeys are being intentionally fed by people. The best thing you can do to prevent conflicts with turkeys is to make sure you aren’t intentionally or unintentionally feeding them. Learn more about how to minimize aggressive turkey encounters > https://lnkd.in/ePvtKC5T
