High-definition static terrestrial laser scanners rapidly acquire high-density, survey-grade point data of the existing conditions of an object or an area. This technology is the methodology we used to document the aging cast concrete sculpture panels located above the main entrance of the Willmar City Auditorium. You can see in this video how the processed scan data was used to produce a dense mesh of each panel from which an extremely-detailed 3-D model was created.

Today’s SLAM systems deliver survey-grade point cloud quality and enable high quality mapping of construction sites and buildings. We used this technology to preserve historical data on the Willmar City Auditorium. Located on the main level of the City Auditorium just inside the main entrance, the War Memorial Room was designed for visitors to reflect and honor veterans who served our country with bravery. Engraved stones from each state line the walls, an effort initiated by the American Legion to honor Minnesota veterans. A painted mural depicting various conflicts and the ravages of war surrounds the room. Artistic sculpture panels on the front facade of the building and the Memorial Room, both scanned by MTZ Geospatial as part of preservation efforts, have secured the building into the list of the National Register of Historic Places. PBS did a great segment on the Willmar War Memorial Room in their Postcards series. We'll put the link to it in the comments.
