In this WEEK’S COMMODITY SUMMARY 4/14/2025 written by John Barone, President of Market Vision, Inc. he summarizes by stating: 4/14 - Despite the 90-day reprieve on most reciprocal tariffs, the trade scenario has gone from bad to worse, given the 145% (as of 4/13) tariffs on Chinese imports and 125% Chinese tariffs on U.S. goods. The top 5 import categories from China in 2024 were: 1. Electrical & Electronic Equipment: $127B (smartphones, laptops, batteries); 2. Machinery: $85B (nuclear reactors, boilers); 3. Toys, Games, and Sports Equipment: $32B; 4. Plastics: $21.5B; and 5. Furniture & Lighting: $20.9B. Smartphones and laptops - the 2 biggest single-product imports – were given an exemption on Saturday. At the restaurant level: packaging, gloves, uniforms, kitchen equipment, tableware (particularly take-out), furniture, and fixtures are all in those top 5 categories – and could all be more than double previous cost levels soon. Can we live without China? It will be very hard – and it will be pandemic-level chaos for supply chains. ➡️https://lnkd.in/e4MrVw2p Are you a qualified multi-unit CHAIN OPERATOR? In this WEEK’S COMMODITY SUMMARY 4/7/2025 written by John Barone, President of Market Vision, Inc. he summarizes by stating: 4/7 – The toughest thing about evaluating the new tariffs is trying to determine whether they are a temporary negotiating tool – or a more permanent revenue-raising strategy. The President is indicting both as tariff goals, so the effects might take a while to play out on a country-by-country basis. Regarding commodity prices, produce will be impacted almost immediately. However, fruits and vegetables covered under the USMCA are exempt from newly imposed tariffs. Cattle imports and pig imports from Mexico and Canada are also still protected under the USMCA. However, beef trimmings from Australia got hit with an additional 10%. Dairy and poultry – domestic industries – could see price weakness as exports falter. Ditto for wheat and corn prices. Soybean oil prices have trended higher as tariffs on China hit used cooking oil imports (for biofuel). Of all proteins, seafood prices will be the most impacted. ➡️https://lnkd.in/eGpNxG4y Are you a qualified multi-unit CHAIN OPERATOR? In this WEEK’S COMMODITY SUMMARY 3/31/2025 written by John Barone, President of Market Vision, Inc. he summarizes by stating: 3/31 - In its quarterly report (3/27), the USDA said that U.S. inventories of hogs and pigs on March 1st (74.5M head) were down 1.7% from last quarter (12/1/24) and 0.2% below a year ago. Market-hog numbers were also down 0.2% from a year ago and the breeding herd was 0.6% lower. The number of pigs per liter for the Dec-Feb quarter were 11.65, up 1.0% from a year earlier. Farrowing intentions for the next half-year (Mar- Aug) are down 0.5%. The report was surprisingly bullish (for prices) and a reversal of last quarter’s bearish report. But it might not matter. Wednesday is “Liberation Day” and Mexico accounts for 40% of U.S. pork exports. Without a last-minute reprieve, retaliatory tariffs from Mexico would slow U.S. exports and put a dent in domestic pork prices. Lean hog futures, at $86.70/cwt on 3/28, are averaging $85.28 ytd vs $79.03 in 2024. Forward futures for Apr-Dec 2025 are averaging $88.65 vs $86.92/cwt in 2024. ➡️https://lnkd.in/etk-B7jn Are you a qualified multi-unit CHAIN OPERATOR? In this WEEK’S COMMODITY SUMMARY 3/24/2025 written by John Barone, President of Market Vision, Inc. he summarizes by stating: 3/24 - In Friday’s cattle report, the USDA said feedlot inventories on March 1st were 11.84M head, down 2.2% from a year ago. New placements onto feedlots in Feb were down 17.7% from a year ago. The U.S. imported 1.2M head of feeder cattle from Mexico last year before imports were halted on Nov 25, 2024, due to “new world screwworm” disease. Mexico accounted for 4% of our 28M beef cows in 2024. Imports from Mexico resumed on a very limited basis in Feb. However, the 3-month stoppage has left the U.S. short 300,000+ feeders. In March’s WASDE, the USDA said beef output was up 0.1% in 2024. Lower feed prices helped producers grow cattle to higher weights to compensate for declining herd numbers. However, the USDA is still projecting a 1.1% decline in beef output for 2025 – and for cattle prices to average $200.00/cwt in 2025, up from an already record-high $187.12/cwt in 2024. ➡️https://lnkd.in/excFgZTS THE SPRING Market Vision, Inc.
