Maybe a hot take, but internships shouldn’t just be for college students What about the chronically ill 19-year-old who found college inaccessible but taught themselves graphic design on Youtube and designs for their social media page with over 14k followers but can’t get a job without corporate experience with clients? Or the newly Disabled professional looking to transition out of teaching and into a more flexible job who needs an internship to get his foot in the door in a new industry? Yet, so many internships are either exclusively for college students and/or require prior internship experience. Leading to the "can’t get work experience without work experience" loop. So, we teamed up with InvisiYouth - a nonprofit for chronically ill and Disabled teens and young adults - to share some tips on where to start. Mid/late career folks, help out our early career friends: What’s one thing you wish you knew when applying for your first internship? We're like a family here...you'll love our pizza Fridays in the - hardly accessible - office! 😅 #HireDisabledTalent #DisabilityEmployment Image Descriptions: Slide 1: stock image of a white woman with long straight brown hair, wearing a brown blazer and blue skinny jeans, sitting on a couch and shaking a man's hand. The woman's hand is on her heart overly enthusiastically and she's smiling. Text reads: "New Job Role: Inspiration P*rn Intern. Paid in Exposure!" Making Space logo is at the top Slide 2: Pink background with text reading: Skills: Your ability to inspire non-disabled CEOs at quarterly retreats. Pay: Social media exposure, emotional labor. Location: Onsite, NO remote work. Slide 3: Pink background with text reading: Just kidding! April Fools! But for real, for extremely un-inspirational, actually flexible roles, head to our job hub. What an epic day at Microsoft Ability Summit! The summit brought together 20,000 attendees from 168 countries to discuss the future of AI and accessibility, Congratulations to the most amazing leaders, role models and powerhouse women Jessica Rafuse and Jenny Lay-Flurrie 👏 A few takeaways: - Normalize disabled people being experts in subjects beyond just disability. - AI is accelerating the journey to make technology easier for everyone. - Microsoft launched the Xbox Adaptive Joystick, which they created in partnership with the Gaming & Disability community. - Inaccessible travel limits Disabled employees' access to networking, conferences, and executive meetings, contributing to their severe underrepresentation in leadership, less than 3%. It was an absolute honor to be there with Sophie Morgan discussing tech, accessibility, disability representation, Making Space and Making Space Media! #DisabilityRights #RightsOnFlights Image description: Sophie, Jenny, Jessica and Keely take a selfie on the Microsoft Ability Summit set, and individual shots of Sophie and Keely both speaking on the set.
