97% of clinical data goes unused. That’s 50 million gigabytes a year — locked away in EMRs, buried in notes, lost to complexity. To extract insights, health systems today rely on teams of clinicians manually reviewing charts. It’s slow, costly, and inconsistent. Layer Health is changing that. Their AI platform reads and interprets medical records with clinician-level understanding — and does it in hours, not months. This is what clinical inference at scale looks like. Most healthcare AI tools focus on narrow use cases, but Layer is different. They're enabling health systems to extract meaningful insights from messy, unstructured medical data with clinician-level accuracy. It’s a platform that makes clinical data understandable — and actionable. We’re thrilled to lead their $21M Series A and support them as they build the foundation for smarter, faster, more efficient healthcare. https://lnkd.in/g_hT7mtT

Today, we’re excited to announce our investment in Layer Health, a company that is leveraging breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) to unify clinical data and transform chart review activities, starting with clinical registries. For decades, we’ve invested hundreds of billions of dollars in a disparate meshwork of technologies to improve how this data is structured and used to inform contingent activities. The vision has always been to unify raw care data with its clinical and financial outcomes, so that we can map treatment decisions to their real-world impact, in real time. This vision had been an elusive one until we met the Layer Health team last year. Behind this technology is a group of world-class AI researchers and clinicians from MIT, Harvard, and leading technology organizations such as Microsoft, Google and Flatiron. Co-Founder & CEO David Sontag, Ph.D., is a recognized expert in healthcare machine learning who has built a team that combines deep engineering expertise with real-world clinical and product experience: Steven Horng, MD, MMSc, FACEPMonica AgrawalAlastair Blake MDLuke Murray and Divya Gopinath. 💫 Read more on "Why We Invested" here: https://lnkd.in/erjAiepq 📰 Original announcement here: https://lnkd.in/eJuVCmhu 📰 Forbes coverage here: https://lnkd.in/enFjUc29

Great article by Spencer Dorn in Forbes about AI summarization in healthcare, which also talks about Layer Health's unique perspective, where we're focusing initially on settings where there are a set of pre-determined questions that need to be answered by the summary. This perspective allows us to do rigorous validation and monitoring. https://lnkd.in/eTzsMEkx

All healthcare workers—including physicians like me—are "drowning in information but starved for knowledge." AI summarization tools may be the only way out. This new Forbes piece was one of the most challenging—and rewarding—articles I've written. I was lucky to learn from some of this space's brightest and most creative people. (See comments). If you follow my work, you know I strive to avoid hyperbole and seek the middle ground. But after diving so deeply into this, I find it clear that AI summaries are about to go viral across clinical + administrative workflows. Many key questions remain, including: - How can we best ensure AI summaries are trustworthy? - How will summarization converge with other AI tools? - How will all this change the nature of work? - Who will provide AI summaries? (Whereas EHRs partnered on AI scribes, many (including Epic) are fully leaning into building summarization tools themselves). AI summarization in healthcare is among today's most impactful—and under-discussed—topics. I hope my article gets you thinking, and I'm excited to discuss this further. https://lnkd.in/gVKW8Ag4

  • Meet Christopher Reeder, a machine learning scientist at Layer Health! Before joining Layer Health, Chris honed his expertise as an ML scientist and engineer at the Broad Institute, Kyruus Health, and Amazon. Now, he's leveraging cutting-edge machine learning to develop new methods for parsing and understanding clinical information—helping transform complex healthcare data into actionable insights. What drew Chris to Layer Health? In his words: “There’s a perfect balance of ambition and humanity. While the company's technical excellence and visionary goals initially caught my attention, it was the culture of genuine curiosity and collaboration that convinced me to join.” Chris is particularly excited about the rapid advancements in AI and their impact on healthcare: “Today's models demonstrate sophisticated reasoning and nuanced understanding that was unimaginable even months ago. What excites me most is how these advances are transforming abstract possibilities into tangible solutions, bringing us closer to revolutionary breakthroughs in disease treatment and healthcare efficiency.” A favorite part of his experience at Layer so far? Our Friday TGIF meetings: “Rather than feeling like another obligation, these gatherings are a chance to connect with talented colleagues I genuinely enjoy. It’s refreshing to work somewhere where end-of-week reflection and team connection feels natural and energizing.” We’re thrilled to have Chris on the team, pushing the boundaries of AI in healthcare! 🚀💡
