An insider’s perspective: At State of the Valley 2025, Rachel Massaro, Research Director at Joint Venture’s Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies, gave a behind-the-scenes look at the data that goes into the Silicon Valley Index. Rather than just viewing individual data points, Rachel emphasized the importance of connecting the dots across various charts and indicators to create a holistic understanding of the region’s economy, ecosystem, and community health. The Silicon Valley Index is a nationally recognized publication that provides essential data for leadership and decision-making, highlighting the challenges and opportunities facing the region. Under Rachel’s direction for 12 of its 30 editions, the Index ensures that good data remains a cornerstone for shaping the future of Silicon Valley. In his powerful keynote at Joint Venture Silicon Valley’s 2025 State of the Valley, David Brooks (The New York Times, PBS News Hour) addressed the civic, relational, and moral crises shaping today's political moment. Exploring divisions around merit, income, education, and morality, Brooks stressed that, while the U.S. leads in technology, the same divides impacting Silicon Valley affect the nation as a whole. He attributed these divisions to a caste system rooted in educational meritocracy, leading to social and economic inequality. Brooks emphasized that healing is possible but requires deep reflection and a focus on human connection. True healing, he concluded, starts with recognizing and respecting individuals, making sure that everyone feels seen, heard, and understood. How do we heal a divided nation? At State of the Valley, Joint Venture CEO Russell Hancock presents the second of two comprehensive briefings on the 2025 Silicon Valley Index, discussing Community. Key issues facing the region include the housing crisis, wage stagnation, and income disparities. While per capita income is twice the national average, Silicon Valley also has the highest income gaps in the country, with 37% of children living in households below the self-sufficiency level. Hancock discussed the region’s soaring housing costs (the nation’s highest), fewer approved housing units, and increasing homelessness. He also highlighted the impact of inflation and rising costs of childcare and transportation. Joined by experts Erik Solivan (City of San José Housing Director) and Barrie Hathaway (JobTrain CEO), the conversation centered on systemic issues calling for long-term solutions. Sea level rise is already encroaching on the San Francisco Bay shoreline, and the trend is expected to accelerate. At stake are an estimated 104,000 jobs, 20,000 acres of critical ecosystems, 12 wastewater treatment plants, and more. The cost of mitigation is staggering, estimated by the California Coastal Commission at $110 billion. However, the cost of inaction is even higher, potentially surpassing $230 billion. At the Joint Venture blog, Larry Goldzband, director of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) stresses the importance of a coordinated response.
