International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reposted this
Every country has renewable energy potential it can harness to enhance its energy resilience, independence and control, and reduce exposure to supply shocks. The global geopolitical and geoeconomic shifts have certainly pushed us to reshape our understanding of energy security — away from traditional fossil fuel supplies and towards renewable capacity. This week, I had the pleasure of attending the UK/International Energy Agency (IEA) Energy Security Summit in London and discussing with the UK government and other partners how to align energy with economic security for all. I underlined that the shift to renewables from local sources will boost self-sufficiency, shifting energy dependencies from the global to the regional level and making most countries less susceptible to geopolitical disruptions. Renewables can enhance stability and resilience while improving balance of payments and delivering macroeconomic benefits. But to reap these benefits, countries must localise value chains. At IRENA, we believe it is time to give a fresh look at the geopolitical implications of the global energy transition dominated by renewables. This is why we intend to reconvene a Global Commission on the Geopolitics of the Energy Transition, asking political and business leaders to consider how politics, energy, economics, trade, environment, and development are impacted by the impressive growth of renewable energy. 📉 Renewables are rising, but not everywhere. International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)’s 2025 data reveals uneven growth in renewable power capacity: 🔹 Asia: +21.5% 🔸 Africa: +6.7% 🔸 SIDS: Decline 🔸 Central America and the Caribbean: +3.2% This disparity poses a growing geopolitical risk, deepening global imbalances in energy access, resilience, and influence. Without inclusive progress, the energy transition could reinforce existing vulnerabilities. Dive deeper: bit.ly/43wt1eh
