A new study in the journal 'Alcohol' found that at least one in three people suffering from insomnia also consume alcohol in a harmful way. Examining the connection between sleep and hazardous drinking, the authors found a complex loop that also involves stress and depression. Alcohol use disorder is a complex topic and this research shows how it is often deeply intertwined with other health issues, making the case for tailored screening and treatment programmes as a key intervention, alongside better public health communication and programmes targeting those most at risk. #ResponsibleDrinking #ModerationMatters #AlcoholAwareness

About us
The International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to addressing harmful drinking and promoting responsible drinking. Harmful drinking is a priority in its own right, as reflected in the Sustainable Development Goal target 3.5 and WHO’s Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol. Governments also have addressed harmful drinking as one of the risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through instruments such as the WHO Global Action Plan on NCDs and the UN Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of NCDs. We partner with public, civil society, and private stakeholders to advance our mission of contributing to the reduction of harmful drinking and promoting responsible drinking worldwide. We support the target in the WHO NCD Global Monitoring Framework of “at least 10% relative reduction in the harmful use of alcohol” by 2025. IARD is supported by its Member Companies from all sectors of the alcohol industry – beer, wine, and spirits – in their common purpose of being part of the solution to the harmful use of alcohol. Our member companies are AB InBev, Asahi, Bacardi, Beam Suntory, Brown-Forman, Carlsberg, Diageo, Heineken, Kirin, Moët Hennessy, Molson Coors, Pernod Ricard, William Grant & Sons.

We are proud that IARD's members are committed not just to responsible drinking, but to responsible stewardship and sustainability. Just a few recent highlights: Carlsberg Group's Lao Brewery Co. is projected to achieve net-zero emissions ahead of schedule. The HEINEKEN Company reports that 84% of its global operations are now powered by renewable electricity. Pernod Ricard’s Absolut Vodka distillery in Åhus, one of the most energy-efficient in the world, is now fossil free. Moët Hennessy is working with maritime startup Neoline to develop innovative sail-powered cargo shipping solutions. To all our members and their sustainability leads we say: sail on! #ESG #NetZero

Songkran celebrations are underway across Thailand! As millions participate in this joyful water festival marking the Thai New Year, communities are coming together with a shared commitment: making the holiday safer for everyone, especially young people. At IARD, we celebrate the remarkable efforts during Songkran to reduce harmful drinking and prevent underage consumption. Our members are actively contributing to these efforts. For example, Pernod Ricard has reintroduced its "Drink More Water" campaign in Bangkok, now in its second year. This timely initiative focuses on encouraging moderation and educating festival-goers about the dangers of binge drinking during celebrations. Wishing everyone a joyful, safe and meaningful Songkran festival! #ModerationMatters #Songkran #DrinkMoreWater #AlcoholAwareness

🌍Global Standards, Local Impact: Shaping the Future of Age Assurance and Responsible Drinking🌍 Last week, IARD’s Director of Partnerships and External Relations, Laura Brodie, joined age assurance policy professionals from around the world at this year’s Global Age Assurance Standards Summit in Amsterdam, facilitated by Age Check Certification Scheme. The conference focused on the power of effective age assurance policies to deliver global impact, aligned with local needs. The key take away from the conference was clear: 📣 Powerful partnerships deliver positive change📣 Laura highlighted how IARD’s Global Standards have united the entire value chain – from producers and retailers to digital platforms – to take real, measurable action. IARD members have embedded industry-leading standards for online and influencer marketing and partnered with digital platforms to introduce age screening technologies that prevent minors from engaging with alcohol marketing. Eliminating underage drinking is a shared global priority and one area where sustained action is making a difference. Collaboration fuels progress. Together, we can ensure positive momentum continues. Join us in our efforts to take meaningful action to tackle the harmful use of alcohol. #ResponsibleLeadership #StandardsInAction #AgeAssurance

Social license to operate isn’t just about compliance—it’s about trust. From The HEINEKEN Company to Moët Hennessy, from Budweiser Brewing Group (AB InBev) to Johnnie Walker, Pernod Ricard, Jack Daniels, Carlsberg Group, Suntory Global Spirits, Bacardi, our brands are worth billions because people trust them. That trust underpins our inclusion in the “whole of society” approach to reducing harmful drinking. It’s what gives our companies a legitimate role in helping to deliver the UN’s alcohol and health targets globally. That’s why the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD) exists. We help our member companies earn and sustain their social license to operate by setting shared standards and leading collective action: 👉Preventing underage drinking 👉Promoting moderation and responsible consumption for those who chose to drink 👉Partnering with governments and civil society to reduce harmful use Our impact is tangible: billions of warning labels on products worldwide, strict marketing codes, and our Global Standards Coalition—bringing together over 100 companies, from Meta to Walmart committed to responsible consumption. At the record breaking ESG Adria Summit I was proud to join inspiring leaders across sectors Sanela Karic, Luke Wilde and the Managing Director of Porto Montenegro David Margason, on the Social Licence to Operate panel, brilliantly moderated by Vedran Persic. The message was clear: businesses that lead with integrity and transparency help shape a better future—and earn their place in it.
As industries face growing expectations to operate responsibly, the need for genuine stakeholder engagement and transparency has never been more crucial. At #ESGAdria, leaders gathered to explore how companies are evolving to not only meet regulatory demands but also create lasting impact on society. "Social Licence to Operate" panel, moderated by Vedran Persic, brought together Julian Braithwaite (International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD)), Sanela Karic (Adriatic Metals BH, Luke Wilde (twentyfifty - Human Rights Impact for Business), and David Margason (Porto Montenegro) to discuss the essential shift from compliance to tangible social contribution. 💡 What stuck with us: ➡️ A social licence is an ongoing commitment — it’s about building trust through transparency and accountability. ➡️ Companies must move beyond compliance, embedding human rights and sustainability in their core operations. ➡️ Engaging stakeholders, from local communities to regulators, is key to long-term resilience and value creation. ➡️ With evolving regulations like the EU CSDDD, businesses need to adapt quickly to stay ahead and lead with integrity. One thing is clear: today’s successful businesses don’t just meet expectations; they actively shape a better future through ethical practices and responsible leadership. #ESG #SocialLicence #Sustainability #HumanRights #ESGLeadership #CorporateResponsibility

The Netherlands is the latest country to show remarkable progress in reducing harmful drinking. Official statistics show that in just the past ten years, the number of Dutch adults consuming more than the government-recommended amount per week has dropped by well over 40% (from 9.9% to 5.5% of the population). This means that the Netherlands has almost hit – 15 years ahead of schedule! – its target of a 5% rate by 2040. This is a fantastic endorsement of the whole of society approach that the Dutch National Prevention Agreement of 2018 embodied (and which was not signed by a number of anti-alcohol associations in protest at industry also sitting at the table). IARD sees this as further proof that the widest collaboration yields the best results. #ResponsibleDrinking #ModerationMatters

Chile has made impressive strides in reducing underage drinking, with new data showing alcohol consumption among teens aged 14 to 18 declining by more than 5% from 2021 to 2023. Not only that, but the survey also shows another encouraging trend - the perceived risk of alcohol use has increased among young people, meaning that the efforts of educating and raising awareness about the harms associated with underage drinking are making a real impact. That is why we continue to believe in the importance of collaboration between governments, health experts and industry in developing a culture of responsible decision making when it comes to alcohol consumption. #ResponsibleDrinking #PublicHealth https://bit.ly/43FkrKb

At IARD, we work year-round to support global health goals by encouraging moderation, reducing harm and promoting informed choices about alcohol. This month, during Alcohol Awareness Month, we will be highlighting the many ways IARD and its members are working towards common health goals. From improving workplace wellbeing and preventing underage drinking, to supporting drink-driving prevention and advocating for balanced, science-based policies. Today, on World Health Day, we are reminded that public health is a shared responsibility. For those who choose to drink, doing so responsibly means knowing the risks, understanding the guidelines and always putting safety first. We also host a wide range of free resources to help individuals, employers and policymakers stay informed.
