"While there is much that is out of our control, we can still choose to nourish what is best in ourselves, both for our own health and sanity and as a way of loving, protecting, and extending compassion to others." Have you ever noticed that veganism as a movement is not very diverse or inclusive, or wondered why some people have come to believe that this movement actually perpetuates racism? In order to provide an illustration of how these issues intersect, consider that animal protection issues can be directly tied to human exploitation. For example, many nonhuman animals are subjected to horrific abuses in industries such as factory farming. In industrial agriculture, workers at factory farms and slaughterhouses are often undocumented, and are forced to accept low wages and to work in unsafe conditions without legal recourse in addressing discrimination or exploitation. Our graduate program course, Race, Intersectionality, and Veganism, facilitated by Dana M., explores these issues by examining the interconnected systems of racial oppression and the exploitation of nonhuman animals through the work of communities of Color to dismantle oppressive systems, and to advocate for systems designed to promote justice for both people and animals.
