📰 Hot off the press: A new case study tackles a critical question around offshore renewable energy: How can we monitor and mitigate its ecological impact? In a research project led by Dr. Oliver Shipley and Dr. Michael Frisk at Stony Brook University, the team deployed Innovasea's fine-scale positioning system at the Ørsted South Fork Wind Farm to monitor fish behavior near subsea power cables. 🐟 Logging sub-meter fish behavior over 16 months helped reveal how different species use these environments and interact with the systems (for some, it's become their new home 🏠). Tools like fine-scale positioning offer an effective way to evaluate and reduce risks from electromagnetic fields and other disturbances during offshore development by precisely tracking these interactions between the equipment and marine wildlife. Effective UV disinfection requires a tailored approach—especially when delicate live feeds are involved. That was the case for Santomar, which needed a reliable way to sterilize the intake water in its live feed and larval systems. 🤔 The Challenge: Santomar's UV system needed to be strong enough to eliminate the incoming pathogens without harming the rotifers, artemia, and copepods, which are essential for growing its red snapper and totoaba. ✅ The Solution: Innovasea identified the correct UV dosage to achieve this balance and recommended installing two systems: a larger unit for the live feed setup and a smaller one for larval rearing, both positioned after the filtration to ensure proper sterilization. 🐟 The Result: Santomar replaced its polyethylene UV system with two of BIO-UV's HDPE alternatives, which have proven more durable and reliable.
