LEADERSHIP HIGHLIGHT: Meet Dr. Nélida Gómez Quintero, Member-at-Large of the #IEEE TEMS Board of Governors. Dr. Gómez is an innovation and technology manager with extensive experience in academic and industry settings across various fields. She serves as a board director, startup advisor, and mentor. She is currently conducting research on entrepreneurial ecosystems at the The University of Queensland Business School in Australia as part of a project supported by the Australian Research Council (ARC)'s Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology. In addition, Dr. Gomez is on the Board of Advisors at Wisy Platforms, Inc., an enterprise #AI platform for consumer packaged goods companies. Her involvement with a high-tech startup, where she was part of the initial co-founding team, provided her with valuable experience in de-risking business models and contributed to developing diverse competencies. With interests in building ecosystems, fostering relationships, and encouraging early-stage #entrepreneurs to create value-focused business models, Dr. Gomez believes in collective human transformation and views business and technology as means to reshape social systems and organisations. This belief also directs her volunteer efforts with several NGOs and Fundación CREEA, a nonprofit organisation she co-founded with three other entrepreneurs, aimed at designing and implementing programs in entrepreneurship, informal education, culture, and social innovation. As a philomath, Dr. Gomez has experience in academia, business, government, and nonprofits and has traveled to six continents. She believes in working collectively to achieve a preferred shared future. Throughout her career, she has authored scientific and opinion articles and participated in international conferences and discussions, including Google Women Techmakers. New in #IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, “Additive Manufacturing for Spare Parts Management: Is Decentralized Production Always Environmentally Preferable?” Companies are increasingly required to reduce their CO2,eq emissions to remain competitive. Additive Manufacturing (#AM), with its capability to produce parts closer to the point of use (i.e. decentralized production), has gained attention as a potential solution. Managers are particularly considering its adoption for the production of spare parts, as decentralized AM production can reduce transportation requirements and, consequently, CO2,eq emissions. While existing research widely supports the notion that decentralized AM production is more environmentally friendly than centralized AM production, the authors’ findings contradict the literature. https://lnkd.in/e3UjqK-k In this paper, authors Mirco Peron, Luigi Panza, Enes Demiralay, and Srinivas Talluri reveal that centralized AM production can, in fact, be a more environmentally friendly strategy, especially when the amount of CO2,eq emitted during the electricity generation process in the centralized configuration is considerably lower than that in the decentralized configuration. To support spare parts managers in their decision-making process, this article provides a decision tree that suggests when centralized AM production is environmentally preferable. By leveraging this decision tree, spare parts managers can achieve considerable reductions in CO2,eq emissions, resulting in substantial economic benefits, potentially saving up to 3000 USD/year per spare part.
