  • If you're feeling down about our fourth winter (or whichever spring fake out we're on now), remember that snowpack and spring precipitation replenish our groundwater for the warmer, drier months! These water resources are vital for household, agricultural, commercial, industrial, and municipal needs. AND, once warmer temps really ramp up, flood risk will increase, so brush up on flood safety at https://lnkd.in/g4azMcwU

  • Shout out to the DEQ surface water staff who responded to cyanobacteria reports in 2024! Across the state, our staff sampled more than 25 waterbodies and responded to over 150 calls and emails about potential blooms. This important work keeps the public informed about possible cyanobacteria blooms in waterbodies, which can be harmful to people and animals. As the weather warms, our team will be out again testing waterways and informing the public! Learn more about cyanobacteria blooms on our website: https://lnkd.in/g9wxsgvT

  • Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) watercraft inspection stations have begun inspecting watercraft for the 2025 season. Boaters are reminded to take precautions to avoid transporting invasive species, such as quagga and zebra mussels. All boat owners must stop for mandatory inspection when traveling past an Idaho watercraft inspection station during operating hours. More info: https://lnkd.in/gWwjqpnd

  • If you’re a burner, be a good neighbor! Be respectful and burn when weather and air quality are good, and follow these tips to reduce smoke impacts: ✅Consider alternatives like chipping, curbside pickup, composting, lawn mulching, or the landfill ✅Always check to be sure burning is allowed by Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (deq.idaho.gov) and the Idaho Department of Lands (idl.idaho.gov) ✅Burn between 11 am and 4 pm ✅Burn when wind speed is less than 12 mph ✅Burn dry, natural vegetation ✅Make sure the fire has plenty of oxygen ✅Stop burning if your smoke is settling near the ground 🚫Never burn prohibited materials (garbage, plastics, tires, animal waste, demolition material, lumber, pallets) 🚫Do not allow piles to smolder 🚫Do not burn leaves or grass clippings Check air quality at https://lnkd.in/ghMyvZZ5

  • In February, staff from our Coeur d'Alene Regional Office joined with other local water experts to teach high school students about measuring snowpack to determine water availability for the coming year! The students are part of the University of Idaho's Confluence Project, a year-long experiential learning program that connects students to North Idaho’s lakes, streams, mountains, and aquifer through on-site studies and classroom work. We are proud partners in this work that prepares the next generation of scientists. All the great learning was worth the hard snowshoe trek!

  • DEQ's work is highly technical and science-based, but after-hours our artistic side comes out. Staff at our Pocatello Regional Office painted highland cows after work for some team building! Did you know DEQ has six offices across Idaho to best serve the unique needs of each region? Our Pocatello office brings our mission of protecting our state's air, water, and land to southeast Idaho.

  • The first wildfire of 2025 in the Salmon-Challis National Forest was reported on March 15. It was started by campfire embers and was declared "out" the same day. As we get closer to wildfire season, remember that most wildfires are human-caused and preventable. Let's all do our part to prevent wildfires: 🔥Never leave campfires unattended. When extinguishing the campfire, DROWN, STIR, and FEEL to be sure it is DEAD OUT. 🔥Avoid burning during windy conditions. Wind can cause embers to spread quickly, igniting dry vegetation. 🔥Use spark arresters on equipment. Chainsaws, ATVs, and other machinery can produce sparks that ignite dry grass and brush. 🔥Obey all local fire restrictions. Check before starting any outdoor activities that involve fire.
