The #Intelligence Quote of the Week. 🎇 Having “analyst” in your job title doesn’t automatically make you a good one. 🤔 🎓 True expertise requires 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 in at least 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀: 1️⃣ 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 – You can’t analyze what you don’t understand. Whether it’s the Middle East, cyber threats, or financial crime, deep expertise is non-negotiable. 2️⃣ 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 – Analysis isn't just about insight; it’s about impact. Understanding how your organization makes decisions ensures you can assess how your work fits into the overall frame and can support decision making. 3️⃣ 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 – Bias, cognitive traps, and misinformation are constant threats. Formal training in 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀 (SATs) sharpens reasoning and strengthens judgment. 🧠 4️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 – The best analysis is useless if no one understands or acts on it. Clarity, structure, and precision turn insight into real decision support. 💡 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗱𝗱? Being an analyst isn’t just a job title - it’s a skillset. Are you building yours? The #Intelligence Quote of the Week. 🎇 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 is essential for effective analysis. A well-written analytic product leaves no room for ambiguity - it delivers insights with precision, brevity, and impact. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱 should serve a purpose, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 should drive understanding forward, and 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 should be expressed with confidence proportional to the available evidence. 🧐 In Intelligence and risk assessment, unclear writing isn’t just a 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘄 - it is or can be a 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲. ⚠️ If key insights are buried in jargon, excessive detail, or vague phrasing, decision-makers may misinterpret findings or overlook crucial warnings. 🤷♂️ That’s why 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 must come before 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. And this is one reason, why I advocate the use of 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀 (#SATs). As 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀, they help you to 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 and 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 your thoughts. 🧠 Because Analysts need to structure their arguments logically, focus on what truly matters, and use language that makes complex issues accessible - without oversimplifying. Good analysis doesn’t just inform - it compels action. And for that, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. With this in mind: 𝗚𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹! 😎 - Improving Intelligence through #training and #consulting! The #Intelligence Quote of the Week. 🎇 This quote highlights the 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 analysts must maintain between 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 and 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 when presenting their findings. 🧐 Overselling certainty—especially when the supporting evidence is ambiguous or limited—can undermine credibility and erode trust in the analytical process. 🔃 Decision-makers rely on intelligence not just for 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, but also for a nuanced understanding of 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 and 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸. 🧠 By 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 the 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 and 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 of their evidence, analysts can foster informed decision-making and 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, which can lead to skepticism or even outright dismissal of their work. 👍 With this in mind: 𝗚𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹! 💪 - Improving Intelligence through #training and #consulting! 𝗔 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 for the #Intelligence Quote of the Week. 🎇 This format has generated quite a bit of attention in recent years, which I would now like to use to focus even more attention on further professionalizing the intelligence profession. To this end, I would like to 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 that are important to me for different reasons. The International Association for Intelligence Education (IAFIE) and the International Association For Intelligence Education - European Chapter. IAFIE has set itself the task to serve as the primary association for advancing research, knowledge and professional development in intelligence education. The IAFIE European Chapter (EC) pursues this goal with a particular focus on Europe. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲? 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭: I usually refrain from political assessments because I believe that there are enough experts for that on LinkedIn. However, my personal impression is that we have long found ourselves in a systemic rivalry between those states that uphold democratic values and those that never did or have strayed from this path. We need a professional intelligence community to meet these challenges. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮: What I have listed under 1 also particularly affects Europe. Europe is increasingly losing touch with relevant developments in many areas. This is also, but of course not only, due to an insufficiently comprehensive picture of the situation that allows a realistic assessment of the situation. I am well aware that even when a situation picture is available, it is sometimes deliberately ignored. Nevertheless, we in Europe must stick together – because we are in the same boat and we have more in common than we have differences. This also applies to the intelligence communities of our countries. IAFIE EC would like to help us to get better and to also get to know each other better. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯: And this is a very personal reason, but one that I am willing to share. My first real point of contact came about through Randy Pherson. To this day, I still associate the organization very closely with him. And since he has meant a lot to me as a person, colleague and role model, the mission of IAFIE means a lot to me, too. That is another reason why I support IAFIE as one of the Regional Directors Europe, and another reason why I would like to use the reach of this format to make IAFIE better known. That is also why I chose Randy as the author for this first quote under the new design. With this in mind, let's work together to professionalize intelligence. Let's come together over what we have in common and let's work together to better inform the societies we serve and thus make them more resilient. 💪 - Improving Intelligence through #training and #consulting!
