“I am here to be a conduit to help the people calling and they are my community, so being able to do this job is so immensely rewarding.” Our Public Safety Telecommunicators (TCs) answered 85 calls to 911 within just 5 minutes one March afternoon. Terrified callers alerted them that “a plane fell out of the sky” striking a Brooklyn Park home. The TCs remained calm under what they described as a controlled chaos, coordinating radio communications and dispatching first responders to the scene while gaining pertinent information from the callers. Watch as Telecommunicators Beerling and McNeill speak with Kare 11 about that unforgettable day. https://lnkd.in/eQE2mNCK

When Hanna Sczepanski isn’t helping solve crimes using DNA, she's coaching competitive gymnastics. We got the chance to talk to the girls she coaches, and they think it’s pretty cool she’s a scientist even though they’re a little murky on the details. Watch to learn more about Hanna and the inspiring work she does as a DNA Analyst in our Forensic Science Laboratory and as a coach to younger generations.

“We ask first responders to be there for us in emergencies, and it’s time that we are there for them with childcare solutions that work.” Sheriff Witt testified alongside Representative Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn yesterday in support of a bill to establish childcare options specifically for law enforcement officers in Hennepin County. With childcare access hindering many, especially those of us who work irregular shifts, from pursuing careers in public safety, Sheriff Witt hopes this proposal to coordinate, train, and recruit a cohort of providers will remove the barriers people face and assist in our recruitment and retention efforts. Learn more at the link in our comment below.

They’re not in the public eye like our deputies, but their work is key to our law enforcement success each and every day. April is National Records & Information Management Month, and we recognize the importance of keeping our data organized and secure. In 2024, our Central Records Unit satisfied more than 37,000 warrants and responded to over 57,000 phone calls. We are grateful for all team members who ensure timely and accurate processing of sensitive records and information. #RIMM #RecordsAndInformationManagementMonth

Over the past three months, Sheriff Witt has been proud to meet with Minnesota’s federal delegation to discuss bipartisan priorities for public safety. In these meetings, Sheriff Witt discusses challenges, priorities and successes unique to Hennepin County. The common theme from those conversations is that cities and counties must have the resources and support they need to keep communities safe. Sheriff’s offices face evolving challenges that require strong partnerships and reliable support at every level of government, and we are grateful for the support of these officials. Sheriff Witt appreciates the delegation’s commitment to Hennepin County public safety, and we look forward to continued collaboration to ensure agencies have the tools and resources necessary to protect Minnesotans.
