About us

GCS is the third largest school district in North Carolina, serving nearly 70,000 students. The second largest employer in a 12-county area, GCS’ more than 10,000 full- and part-time employees enthusiastically share the district’s mission: to graduate responsible citizens prepared to succeed in higher education or the career of their choice. The district’s 127 schools, located in both urban and rural areas, include elementary schools serving grades K through 5, and in some instances, pre-K through 5. To the relief of working parents, after-school care is offered at many elementary schools throughout the county. The district also has middle schools (grades 6-8), high schools (grades 9-12), two special education schools (Gateway and McIver Education Centers), two SCALE sites, which provide an alternative to long-term suspensions, and Twilight School, which offers high school students a flexible schedule to complete graduation requirements. GCS offers parents and students a wide range of educational choices that are not usually found in public school systems, including 56 choice schools and programs. • Thank you for stopping by!

Monday was a homecoming day for Superintendent Mo Green as he continued his #MoWantsToKnowNC tour in the Piedmont-Triad region, starting with a visit to Allen Jay Preparatory Academy (Guilford County Schools). Superintendent Green toured the school, visiting several classes to observe hands-on engaging instruction. In the evening, Mount Tabor High (Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools) hosted our Piedmont-Triad region Mo Wants to Know Listening and Learning Session. We are so grateful to everyone in the Piedmont-Triad region for joining us last night!

  • #GCSCelebrates | It is School Board Appreciation Month! To help show gratitude to our board members, carpentry students from Andrews High created these beautiful plaques with the GCS logo and a star designating the location of Guilford County in our state. ⭐💙 Thank you to each of our board members. • #GCSCelebrates | Donna Bell has worked for the state since 1993, including as the Director of Facilities and Planning for GCS. At last night's board meeting, she received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the state's highest honor, given only to retiring individuals with 30 or more years of service to the state. Deputy Superintendent of Business and Operations Julius Monk presented Bell with the award on behalf of former Governor Roy Cooper. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ea_BmyVi

  • #GCSGoalGetters | New year, new schools in GCS! Peck K-8 welcomed its families and students to the brand-new school during an open house over winter break. Students were eager to see their fresh spaces, which are geared towards learning in the 21st century. We can't can't wait to see the memories that will be made here. This would not have been possible without taxpayers and our bond. Thank you for supporting GCS! 🌟💙

  • #GCSWrapped | Lindsay Brake is a Curriculum Facilitator at Southern Middle and has spent all 22 years of her education career in Southern. Looking back on her time in Guilford County Schools, she is filled with memories of this community. "The principal of Allen Jay Middle (now Southern Guilford Middle) at the time, Mr. Ken Wheat, had faith in me as a new educator straight out of UNCG. I was excited to start teaching, little did I know that I would likely spend my entire educational career serving the Southern Guilford community." Brake has spent time teaching multiple grade levels, coaching athletic teams and once served as a literacy coach. She has witnessed the school undergo many transitions but understands that her job is greater than what happens just within the walls of Southern Middle. "In recent years, children of former students have been entering the halls of SG. It warms my heart to see these former students and that they have faith in Southern Middle, just as Mr. Wheat did in me, to nurture and grow their own kids. I always tell others that I am Southern Guilford’s biggest cheerleader." Thank you for your dedication to Southern, Guilford County Schools and our students. Lindsay Brake shows what it means to be #BetterTogether.
