    Director of Sustainability at Booking.com

📣 We're proud to release Booking Holding’s Annual Sustainability Report — an in-depth look at the progress we’ve made as we continue working toward a more sustainable travel industry. I am especially proud of the progress we have made toward our Net Zero target by reducing our scope 1 and 2 emissions by 85% and scope 3 emissions by 17% since 2019, our baseline year. We have also increased the number of sustainability certified accommodations on our platform by 43% – another area where we have made great strides. Equally exciting: this year marks the 10th edition of our Sustainability and Travel research! 🎉 Over the past decade, this research has offered insights into how traveler attitudes, behaviors, and global challenges are shaping the future of travel. This year, we expanded the lens. For the first time, we explored not just how travelers feel — but how, as residents, they perceive the impact of tourism on their communities. Three themes stood out: 1️⃣ Interest in sustainable travel remains strong, but travelers continue to face barriers in turning that intent into action. Simplicity, clarity, and trust still matter. 2️⃣ The definition of sustainable travel is expanding on both sides of the lens. They increasingly see it not just as an environmental concern, but as something deeply connected to local communities. 3️⃣ Residents recognise the potential benefit that tourism can bring to their community. Instead of capping visitors, they’re calling for investment in destination infrastructure – think public transport, waste management and community amenities. The kind of improvements that benefit both visitors and locals alike. Thank you to all our collaborators, colleagues, and partners for helping drive the industry forward. On this Earth Day, we reflect on the progress made over the past year — and recognise the immense journey still ahead of us. • Self-sufficiency and sustainability are key to success at OZONE LIFE MAADHOO, and this extends to the spa and their wellbeing treatments. By taking a 360 degree approach to the local products they use, the resort is able to make their own massage oils, produce baskets from coconut trees and incorporate the nuts as a shell massage and the remnants as a scrub. • Green Globe visits OZEN LIFE MAADHOO where they've created a really unique initiative by using floating solar panels to generate power. Since the Maldives is 99% water, there's not much land and not much space. The resort is able to generate around 230 kw of power every day and plans to build even more solar platforms in the future to supply all of its energy needs.
