📢 Check SENSOPAD's new leaflet #Endometriosis (ED) affects 1 in 10 women and individuals assigned female at birth, yet diagnosis remains a lengthy process, averaging 7.5 years, due to the limited availability of non-invasive detection methods. The SENSOPAD project is developing sensor-based tools to analyse biomarkers in menstrual fluid, aiming to support earlier and more accessible detection of ED. Our newly produced leaflet outlines the project’s approach and key technological innovations. I am happy to share our new article published in 𝘚𝘰𝘧𝘵 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳, titled ``Evaporation driven buckling of a drop laden with graphene oxide nanosheets". This work is done in collaboration with Eva Krolis, Alvaro Marin and Lorenzo Botto. You can read the article here: https://lnkd.in/ejvrHnGt In this study, we investigate how water drops containing graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets buckle as the drop evaporates. The buckling process helps retain the large surface area of the 2d nanosheets, which are commercially sold as GO powders by Graphenea. While buckling is achieved by spray drying the graphene suspensions, the physics behind evaporation driven buckling remains unclear. Our research takes the first step towards understanding this phenomenon. The results are relevant to the development of graphene-based electrodes, lubricants and functional particles. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: 1. 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 - Particle adsorption at the air-water interface does not change the evaporation rate. We explained this by using a theory developed for physics of chemoreception. 2. 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐭 - When GO particles adsorb at the interface, the interface becomes incompressible and the drop buckles earlier. 3. 𝐁𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐎 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 - Faster evaporation leads to larger, thinner shells resulting in smaller buckling wavelength of the GO capsules, as predicted by linear elastic shell theory.
