Enthusiasm for science and research at Girls' Day at our institute! 🔬 Yesterday, #GirlsDay2025 took place. Together with other #DLR institutes, we opened our doors to young girls interested in science and offered deeper insights into our research. Firstly, our colleagues simulated the re-entry of a so-called Crew Return Vehicle into the atmosphere, thereby demonstrating the special characteristics of #CMC material. The young researchers had also the chance to crash selfmade objects in our miniature Drop Tower and to investigate their crash behaviour. We were delighted by the interest shown and hope we could inspire curiosity for STEM careers! 🌟 Many thanks to our team: Sandrine Hönig, Stefan Frick, Erik Wegener, Leonardo Marconi and Luisa Jendrzok. 🔬 LH₂ Tank Integration for Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft – Presented at the Architecting Future Aviation Symposium ✈️ The integration of #LH₂ cryogenic tanks into aircraft structures is a key challenge for the future of hydrogen-powered aviation. These tanks must withstand extreme conditions, including temperatures as low as 20 K, internal pressures of up to 10 bar, and complex dynamic load cases such as sloshing, and crash loads. To address these challenges, we are developing a comprehensive process chain that enables the efficient analysis and evaluation of different #tank integration concepts. A crucial part of this approach is the extension of the CPACS data format, allowing for a detailed representation of #cryogenic tanks. This includes multi-layered tank vessels with material definitions, reinforcement structures such as stringers and frames, internal baffles to control liquid movement, and structural integration into the airframe. To support model generation, we are utilizing #PANDORA, an advanced modelling and simulation environment that enables automated geometry generation, meshing, and subsequent load case analysis, including quasi-static and dynamic conditions. Our toolchain will incorporates state-of-the-art numerical analyses, allowing us to assess the tank's interaction with the fuselage under various conditions. A particular focus is on #crash assessments and certification strategies, as regulations for LH₂ tanks in aviation are still evolving. The video shows the isothermal #sloshing simulation of LH₂ in a tank filled at a level of 44 % under a crash relevant triangular deceleration pulse with a peak of 18 g (cut view). To analyze fluid-structure-interaction we used the Virtual Performance Solution (VPS) Software provided by ESI Group. We are excited to present our scientific poster about this topic at the Architecting Future Aviation Symposium on April 1-2, 2025. Join our colleagues Nathalie Toso, Dieter Kohlgrüber and Michael Petsch for a discussion on the challenges and solutions in hydrogen-powered aviation! ✈💡 You can already finde the poster here: https://lnkd.in/eyy5vEF5 Find more information about the event here: https://lnkd.in/ehiTcKHN Video source: DLR Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V.
