About us
Established in 1965, Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont is a nonprofit organization that connects people to opportunities to find gainful employment and meaningful work. With more than 25 retail stores and 30 donation sites, Goodwill uses proceeds from the sales of donated goods to fund skills training and employment services offered free of charge to thousands of people in our community each year. Through its retail stores, donation sites, the Goodwill Opportunity Campus, and partnerships with employers and other organizations throughout the region, Goodwill builds pathways for people to uncover their passions, enhance their skillsets, and pursue the life they want to achieve for themselves and their families—creating a brighter future for all.

Low-wage employees often face tough choices between career advancement and maintaining public assistance essential for their basic needs. Take Sally's story, for example. She recently got a raise and found herself in a difficult position where her daughter lost Medicaid eligibility and she could no longer afford healthcare subsidies. This fear of losing benefits can prevent people from accepting more work hours, pay raises or promotions. This issue, known as the benefits cliff, not only impacts employees but also employers, who may lose experienced workers without understanding why. The benefits cliff can hinder workforce development and make it challenging to fill important roles or prevent turnover. Recognizing these challenges on employers, we developed the Benefits Cliff Employer Pilot Program. Our Pilot program examines the financial implications of wage increases and seeks innovative solutions to mitigate the benefits cliff on economic growth and mobility. April is Second Chance Month, a time to recognize the barriers justice-impacted individuals face and the power of opportunity to transform lives. At Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont, we’re proud to be a second-chance employer, offering meaningful pathways to employment and stability. Just ask Mark, who came to Goodwill in 2016. What started as a visit for resume help quickly turned into a career, thanks to leaders who saw his potential, not just his past. Today, Mark is a leader in our stores, a mentor to others and a powerful example of what happens when people are given the chance to succeed. Through fair-chance hiring, community partnerships and a commitment to equitable access, we’re helping individuals like Mark build brighter futures for themselves and for our community. Because everyone deserves a second chance. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eiajt3JD #secondchancemonth #secondchanceemployer

It did my heart good to start my morning by donating a living room suite to Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont. This organization is one of my favorite local nonprofits because they have amazing leadership in Christopher (Chris) M Jackson and LaRita Barber and because of their vision to create a community where equitable access to career opportunities is available for all. Many people only see their stores and donation trucks and are unaware of GW’s role in job skills training and the economic development/mobility efforts within our region. I encourage everyone to learn more about their work and to support them through your philanthropy and volunteerism. Also, a shoutout to Brian and Horace for being the coolest pickup crew in the city!! #Goodwill #jobskillstraining #economicmobilty #workplacedevelopment

Last week, we hosted our inaugural L.E.A.D. Conference - an investment in Goodwill's leaders and our mission. L.E.A.D. stands for Learning, Engagement, Accountability, and Development, and this two-day event equipped our team with the tools to drive meaningful change and inspire others. At Goodwill, we invest in people - helping them pursue the life they want to achieve. That starts with our own team. We look forward to seeing the impact of this conference and hope to continue L.E.A.D. in the future! #teammembertuesday #workforcedevelopment #leadership #growth #goodwillmission #morethanastore

As we wrap up Women’s History Month, we’re inspired by Shell Richardson, former Goodwill program participant and former board member, who shared part of her story at the Women's Experience event held at the Goodwill Opportunity Campus earlier this month. She spoke about how she strives to make decisions the way Goodwill does—by looking at the whole picture. #missiondriven #morethanastore

In celebration of Women's History Month, we asked the Goodwill team to share shoutouts to some of the remarkable female leaders who inspire them every day. Our female leaders are instrumental in shaping Goodwill into a great place to work. Their influence is felt daily, leaving a lasting impact on our organization and beyond. As we honor #WomensHistoryMonth, we are reminded of the incredible power and potential of women everywhere.
