Blending Bhutan's craft tradition with modern innovation, the new Gelephu International Airport – designed in collaboration with NACO, Netherlands Airport Consultants – is designed for mindful travel and future expansion, set against a backdrop of Bhutan’s lush subtropical forests, mountains, and rivers. The airport’s diagrid structure is crafted from locally and sustainably sourced timber and adorned with painted wood carvings by local artists inspired by the ‘Kachen,’ a wooden pillar found in Bhutanese architecture revered for its structural significance and intricate design. "An airport is the first and last impression you get of a place you visit. For the Gelephu International Airport, we have tried to embody the nature and culture of the country and the Mindfulness City. The forests that cover the highlands are allowed to flow from the arrival plaza through the airport all the way to the tarmac. Tropical trees provide shade for travelers, and the forest courtyard lines the main functions of immigration, security, and luggage. The airport architecture is composed of modular mass timber frames providing flexibility and expandability, resembling a stylized mountain range at a distance. Upon closer inspection, all the mass timber members are carved and colored according to traditional craft, adorned with three types of dragons representing the past, present, and future of Bhutan. The result is traditional yet avant-garde, forward-reaching and rooted. For me personally, this unusual embrace of traditional craft and color is a true testament to how affected I have been by my encounter with Bhutan - the country, its culture, and its people." - Bjarke Ingels, Founder & Creative Director, BIG The Gelephu Airport’s design will be showcased at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, Ancient Future in May and exhibited until September. The airport is expected to open in 2029. • On 27th January 2025, His Holiness the Je Khenpo, the spiritual leader of Bhutan, visited the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) and offered prayers at the site where the Tashigomang Chorten will be constructed. Lam Tshering Wangdi will be taking the lead under the directives of His Holiness.  A Chorten is a Buddhist stupa, a sacred structure symbolizing enlightenment and often serving as a place of meditation and pilgrimage. The Tashigomang Chorten is inspired by the design of the Dorjidhen Stupa in Bodh Gaya, India—a site of immense significance for Buddhists worldwide as the place where Siddhartha attained enlightenment and became the Buddha. Once completed, the Tashigomang Chorten will stand as a spiritual and cultural centerpiece within GMC, drawing both locals and international visitors while reinforcing the city's vision of mindfulness, community, and spirituality.

  • Today, His Majesty The King conferred the inaugural Bhutan GNH Medal upon Ms. Laurene Powell Jobs, making her the first recipient of this prestigious honour. 🇧🇹 This recognition celebrates her extraordinary contributions to the betterment of humanity. Her transformative work across diverse fields resonates deeply with Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness (GNH) values — sustainable development, cultural preservation, environmental conservation, and good governance. The award reflects Bhutan’s growing commitment to celebrating and supporting individuals who have dedicated their lives to advancing the well-being of humanity and our shared planet. Ms. Laurene Powell Jobs has pioneered approaches to addressing humanity's most pressing challenges. In 2011, she established Emerson Collective, creating an alliance of venture capital investing and philanthropic grant-making to accelerate solutions to complex problems. Under her leadership, Emerson Collective has channeled investments into education, economic mobility, immigration reform, and environmental conservation. Her influence extends to media through the acquisition of The Atlantic and a focus on nonprofit journalism. In 2015, Ms. Laurene Powell Jobs launched XQ: The Super School Project, a $50 million initiative aimed at reimagining the American high school education. In 2021, she created the Waverley Street Foundation, committing $3.5 billion over ten years to address the climate crisis. This substantial investment focuses on underserved communities most impacted by climate change, supporting sustainable food systems, and the transition to clean energy. The foundation operates as a "spend-down fund" focused on environmental resiliency, mitigation, and adaptation. Through these endeavours, Ms. Laurene Powell Jobs exemplifies a new era of philanthropy and purpose-driven investing. Her work has created new pathways in education, supported climate solutions, and catalysed entrepreneurial approaches to systemic challenges. In recognition of her impact, she was named one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People of 2023. On her first visit to Bhutan, Ms. Laurene Powell Jobs will also be visiting the Gelephu Mindfulness City.

The inclusion of digital assets in the GMC’s strategic reserves will enhance the SAR’s economic resilience, and is an evolution of the jurisdiction’s involvement in bitcoin mining. For its strategic reserves, GMC intends to recognise digital assets that have large market capitalisations and deep liquidity to ensure that they can be easily bought and sold with minimal price impact. In addition, GMC will look to recognise digital assets that are issued on more mature, secure blockchains that support monitoring of on-chain transactions.  Located on the land bridge connecting the rapidly-growing economies of South Asia, GMC is uniquely positioned to serve the more than two billion people in the region, and one of its key economic focuses is on promoting and supporting the use of blockchain technology, in line with the SAR’s emphasis on innovation and pioneering of new technologies. This announcement follows the enactment of GMC Law No. 1 of 2024, or the ‘Application of Laws Act 2024’, which was announced on 26 December 2024. The enacted set of laws for GMC included establishing the legal and regulatory framework in GMC for companies seeking to offer financial services involving digital assets. The enactment of this law, coupled with recognising digital assets such as BTC, ETH and BNB as part of GMC’s strategic reserves, is intended to bolster the growth of the digital asset ecosystem in GMC within a technologically progressive, yet well-regulated environment.  In March 2025, GMC plans to convene a high-level meeting in the Kingdom of Bhutan of senior government officials and industry leaders from across the world to discuss the recognition of digital assets as part of a jurisdiction’s strategic reserves, and the setting up of an international advisory panel on digital assets for GMC.
