About us

Girl Up is a girl-centered leadership development initiative, focusing on equity for girls and women in spaces where they are unheard or underrepresented. We believe when girls and women are in positions of influence, they work to create a more just and equitable world for everyone. Girl Up operates a global network of regional affiliates reaching 315,000 girls in 155 countries. We deliver evidence-based leadership development training through our girl-led Clubs, programs, and events. As members of a global movement, girls are a force for social good — connected to a Community of their peers who are advocating for policy change and advancing gender justice. Founded in 2010 and hosted by the United Nations Foundation, Girl Up welcomes girls and youth of all gender identities to start a Club and join our movement to advance gender justice worldwide. Together, we are expanding girls’ skills, rights, and opportunities to lead, and changing the face of leadership for generations to come.

UK UN Youth Delegate @CPD58 | Advisor at Mission 44 & Plan International UK | UCL | Human Rights

I am excited to formally announce that I have joined the UK Government’s official Delegation to the United Nations’ 58th Commission on Population and Development, held at the United Nations’ New York Headquarters next week. The Commission on Population and Development (CPD) is one of the ten Functional Commissions of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The CPD monitors, reviews and assesses the implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development. Alongside my role as a government delegate, I will be attending as apart of Plan International’s civil society delegation. I have a responsibility in advocating for sexual reproductive health and rights through acting as an advisor to the government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and engaging in high-level multilateral dialogues Together with my delegation, we have chosen key areas of priority, which include women and girls in humanitarian crises, accessible and affordable services, and ending gender-based violence. Since finding out I was selected in December, I have been preparing with the wonderful people at Plan International UK and the FCDO’s SRHR team, without whose support none of this would be possible. 📷: Jonathan Chia-Chun Hung

  • Hi, my name is Giovanna, a former Girl Up leader from Brazil 🇧🇷, and I'm doing a micro-takeover of the @girlup account today to share with you about my #CSW experience. But first, I have a question for you: If you had a magic wand and could solve gender equality with just one spell, how would you use your magic powers? 🪄 I asked myself this question during my first-ever United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) last month, and my answer was clear: I’d invest in girls’ education and leadership! 💫 As part of the Young Ambassadors Society (YAS) delegation, I experienced a whirlwind of conversations on multiple aspects of gender equality across different regions. Although I loved all the discussions, my favorites were about adolescent girls’ rights, andI especially enjoyed speaking about girls' power with Plan International and Women Deliver. There’s something magical that happens when we believe in girls. 💖 📸 Photo 1 — Pure joy after getting my pass and entering the UN headquarters for the first time! 📸 Photo 2 — Me with my favorite Sustainable Development Goals. 🌍 📸 Photo 3 — Meeting with Plan International and Canada’s Global Affairs to discuss youth participation in these conferences. 📸 Photo 4 — Classic photo in front of the UN symbol. ✨ 📸 Photo 5 — Me and the other women from the YAS delegation attending a session on women’s health. 📸 Photo 6 — Me speaking at AGIP’s panel on 8 actions governments and organizations can take to ensure girl-centered accountability. 🎤

  • Hi, I’m Lana, a 17-year-old Girl Up leader from the USA! 🇺🇸 Today, I’m doing a micro takeover on Girl Up’s account showcasing my recent trip to NYC for the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). As part of the Girl Scouts USA delegation, I represented young girls' voices and advocated for intersectionality. I had a wonderful time speaking on a panel with the UN Youth Office and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, and I had the chance to meet girls from across my country and globe. Swipe through to see more of my time at CSW! 📸 Photo 1 - Me, ready to kick off the 69th Commission on the Status of Women! 📸 Photo 2 - Met with Felipe Paullier, ASG for Youth Affairs at the UN Youth Office, and Julieta, WAGGGS Global Advocacy Champion. 📸 Photo 3 - Presented recommendations about meaningful girls' participation to the UN Youth Office and the World Association of Global Girl Guides and Girl Scouts as a panelist. 📸 Photo 4 - Met a fellow girl leader, Zoya, at the UN Secretary-General's Town Hall in the General Assembly Hall! 📸 Photo 5 - Loved hearing from UN Women about partnerships and leveraging Generation Equality to advance the Beijing Platform for Action during their event in the ECOSOC Chamber. 📸 Photo 6 - Met a fellow Girl Up Coalition Leader, Izzy, at a UN Women Town Hall event!
