This movement, initially gaining momentum on TikTok, pushes back against lavish lifestyles and unnecessary spending to promote sustainability. With the fashion industry producing over 92 million tons of textile waste yearly, clothing purchases are an ideal starting point for consumers. As consumers become more strategic about their purchases, brands must prepare for this conscious shift in consumer behavior. Here are key ways retailers can engage with this movement: ➡️ Extend product lifecycles: Differentiate your brand through secondhand resale programs, including repair services, trade-ins, and more to start your commerce journey. This creates an additional revenue stream while strengthening customer loyalty and supporting your sustainability narrative. ➡️ Position your brand as an investment: Emphasizing material durability and timeless design helps customers justify premium price points, speaking to the cost-per-wear an item can offer in the long-term.  ➡️ Learn from your secondhand channel: A resale channel is a source for both product insights and customer insights. Trade-in and repair programs can reveal trends in how your items wear over time, helping you to improve your product development processes. Additionally, with 62% of Gen Z shoppers prioritizing sustainable brands, resale is an opportunity to engage with and learn from a new generation of shoppers.  Underconsumption will eventually extend beyond fashion, making this a great starting point for brands looking to improve to get ahead of their environmental impact. Insight of the week: there are different circles of the circular economy. 1️⃣ Repair/Reuse 2️⃣ Refurbish/Remanufacture/Repurpose 3️⃣ Recycle/Return The smaller the circle, the less time, effort, money, and margin are needed to return the product to a value stream. Recycling can be a barrier to entry for companies interested in circularity, as the market for recycled content is fiercely competitive. There are other ways to have circular operations to deliver on-margin wins for the company.

The fashion industry is one of the dirtiest industries that exist. The industry itself is responsible for roughly ten percent of GHG emissions, and fast fashion’s impact not only contributes to that percentage, but is the leading force. Today, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), ranking member of the House Appropriations Interior and Environment Subcommittee, alongside Reps. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) and Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Calif.), announced the first-ever Congressional Slow Fashion Caucus to curb fast fashion pollution through climate-smart policies; a huge step in the fight against the climate crisis. This morning, the Members held a press conference to launch the platform and invited ThredUp's Chief Legal Officer Alon Rotem to deliver the opening remarks. “The launch of the Slow Fashion Caucus gives us a powerful new platform to forge ahead. Together we can drive the fashion policy agenda forward and change the incentive structures to benefit our shared planet and resources,” Alon said in his remarks. Thank you to the Congresswoman Pingree for inviting ThredUp to a part of this incredibly crucial platform, and to Rachel Seville Tashjian and The Washington Post for diving into what the Slow Fashion Caucus has set out to do.
