I am still energized about a long overdue conversation about Implicit Bias (IB) in healthcare, how we have dropped the ball, and most importantly, how we can do better. Here are a few takeaways: 📌 IB is a natural part of the human experience 📌 While under-represented populations are more likely to experience harmful bias, all populations are susceptible 📌 Harmful IB is most likely to show up during stress, multi-tasking, and when there is need for rapid closure. Therefore, healthcare professionals are especially susceptible 📌 We must sharpen our ability to contextualize IB as a quality, safety and financial risk 📌 Normalizing humility institutionally is an underrated Superpower 📌 We must call it out, but show mercy and grace when we witness honest, unintentional manifestations of IB 📌 There is no endpoint. This is a Lifelong assignment O. Ben Carroll II, MBA, MHA, ACHE, John W. Sharpe, MSPT, MBA, FACHE Stephan Davis, DNP, MHSA, FACHE, ANEF, FAAN thank you for sharing your brilliant insights.
