About us
The Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) is a global partnership at the nexus of climate action and human mobility to enable positive adaptation journeys for people and communities at the frontline of the climate crisis. It is hosted at the UN Office for Project Services and advanced by champion countries, UN Agencies, the World Bank, and regional organizations with support from philanthropy, civil society organizations and research institutions. Since its establishment in 2021, the GCCM supports positive community transition in the most vulnerable regions through regional initiatives that enable countries and frontline communities to anticipate, plan, and design responses for climate mobility. The GCCM also manages the Communities Climate Adaptation Facility, providing climate quick impact grants of up to USD 100K in support of community-led projects.

🇺🇬 As part of ongoing efforts to implement the Uganda Climate Mobility Blueprint, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), alongside representatives from the Ministry of Water and Environment and the Ministry of Local Government, met with district governments in Luwero – a key area within Uganda’s climate mobility landscape. The discussion focused on understanding local climate mobility dynamics, identifying opportunities for collaboration, and advancing the development of District Climate Change Action Plans (DCCAPs). In Luwero, officials emphasized the growing challenge of pastoralist displacement, as traditional grazing areas are being converted for other uses, leaving communities without viable mobility routes. The district is also experiencing rising climate-induced disasters, including wildfires that have destroyed homes and increasing instances of food insecurity. While climate action in the district has been project-specific in the past, officials expressed a strong interest in mainstreaming climate and mobility issues into the district development plan, with implementation capacity flagged as a critical gap. The first step in this collaboration will be supporting the development of the district’s Climate Change Action Plan. As we continue working in Uganda, we remain committed to supporting climate mobility solutions in hotspot areas such as Kasese, home to the Muhosha IDP Camp, and Arua, which includes the Imvepi refugee settlement. Strengthening adaptation efforts in these communities remains a priority, ensuring that climate mobility responses are community-driven and action-oriented. Stay tuned for more updates on the Uganda Climate Mobility Blueprint and the next steps in implementing solutions for climate-impacted communities. #ClimateMobility

🇺🇬 As part of ongoing efforts advance the recommendations of the Uganda Climate Mobility Blueprint, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), alongside representatives from the Ministry of Water and Environment, Directorate of Water Resources Management, Uganda and the Ministry of Local Government, met with district governments in Nakasongola – a key area within Uganda’s climate mobility landscape. The discussion focused on understanding local climate mobility dynamics, identifying opportunities for collaboration, and advancing the development of District Climate Change Action Plans (DCCAPs). In Nakasongola, a climate mobility hotspot in Uganda’s cattle corridor, officials highlighted two major trends. First, increasing pastoralist movements into wetlands and other areas are leading to land use conflicts. Second, flooding has triggered both temporary and permanent relocations. The district has adopted various adaptation measures, including water access initiatives, micro-irrigation schemes, climate-smart agriculture, and awareness campaigns through radio programs. The district’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee will play a key role in shaping the next steps of collaboration with GCCM. This past week, the Rising Nations Initiative (RNI) and the Government of Tuvalu continued their community consultations in Nanumea. These discussions continue to spotlight climate impacts on the island and their impact on cultural heritage and infrastructure. Weather-related disasters, such as Cyclone Pam in 2015, damaged houses, crops and infrastructure on the island - such as this abandoned hospital (seen here in image 1). Through community engagement and collaboration with policymakers and experts, RNI is supporting efforts to build resilience, adaptation and economic growth amidst the climate crisis. The Global Centre for Climate Mobility is excited to join its partner, the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), in Tuvalu to present the first-ever sea-level rise insurance for affected communities. Under the Rising Nations Initiative, the GCCM and its partners have built unique data and knowledge related to sea-level rise that have enabled this novel insurance solution designed to protect vulnerable communities against high-tide events. Prime Minister Feleti Teo welcomed this historic achievement and emphasized in his keynote remarks that the innovative work of the GCCM, UNCDF, and their partners is “about empowering people to recover faster, plan better, and live with greater security in a time of climate uncertainty.”

An aerial view of Lotoleilei, the island chapel and meeting centre in Nanumea. The site, originally named Tulaafenua, was constructed from 1931-1938, and has been extended six times. The site is a crucial space for community gatherings within the island. There, the Rising Nations Initiative (RNI) and the Government of Tuvalu met with community members and visited these touchstone community sites as part of a larger effort to discuss the impact of climate change on cultural heritage in Tuvalu. This April, the RNI - alongside the Government of Tuvalu - is meeting with communities across Tuvalu’s islands to discuss the impact of climate change on their communities and the importance of cultural heritage to their lives.
