From early mornings on the boat to a great closing dinner with Permanent Secretary Fakasoa and the Rising Nations Initiative youth, the RNI consultations on the eight island communities in Tuvalu have been a truly enriching learning journey. I left the country with a deep feeling of gratitude towards over 200 Tuvaluans who generously shared with us their time, knowledge, culture and incredible food! And towards the government of Tuvalu for the leadership and partnership. A heartfelt thanks to Ambassador Samuelu for his leadership and the stellar team whose dedication and hard work made the consultations a success. Global Centre for Climate Mobility

In consultations with the community of Nui, the Rising Nations Initiative (RNI) and the Government of Tuvalu, residents shared impacts of sea level rise and emphasized the need for further protections to ensure the island can remain resilient and adapt to climate change impacts. The women of the community also reflected on the importance of continuing traditional cultural practices, such as weaving, to preserve cultural identity. The RNI team also extends its heartfelt gratitude to the community of Nui for their warm hospitality in hosting a traditional island feast, known as te kaiga o te fenua. The event was a beautiful expression of Tuvaluan culture, featuring shared meals, heartfelt speeches of welcome, gratitude, and farewell. The celebration continued with traditional dancing, and the team was honoured to participate in a truly memorable cultural experience. This April, the RNI and the Government of Tuvalu are meeting with communities across Tuvalu’s islands to discuss the impact of climate change on their communities and the importance of cultural heritage to their lives. This endeavor is part of a larger effort to advance the long-term goals and objectives of the Government of Tuvalu for resilience, adaptation and economic growth amidst the climate crisis. As the Rising Nations Initiative consultations in Tuvalu conclude this April, our work continues as we advance solutions to strengthen community resilience and support positive adaptation journeys across Tuvalu and the Pacific. 🇺🇬 During the month of March, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), in partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment, Directorate of Water Resources Management, Uganda (MWE) and the Ministry of Local Governments of Uganda, engaged with national and district stakeholders throughout Uganda. The Climate Mobility Initiative in Uganda has taken an important step forward in advancing localized climate mobility solutions. These discussions have been crucial in identifying climate risks, strengthening adaptation planning, and fostering collaborative action to address climate-driven displacement and mobility. In partnership with the MWE and the Ministry of Local Government, the GCCM facilitated key engagements in Nakasongola, Luwero, Bududa, and Napak—critical climate mobility hotspots in Uganda. Stakeholders highlighted pressing mobility challenges, including pastoralist displacement, flooding, food insecurity, and climate-induced relocations, while also outlining opportunities for adaptation, such as improved water access, climate-smart agriculture, and stronger disaster preparedness. The conversations have reinforced the need for integrated, community-driven responses that ensure climate mobility is addressed within district and national development plans. While this phase of consultations has concluded, our work continues. 🇺🇬 As part of ongoing efforts to implement the Uganda Climate Mobility Blueprint, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), alongside representatives from the Ministry of Water and Environment and the Ministry of Local Government, met with district governments in Luwero – a key area within Uganda’s climate mobility landscape. The discussion focused on understanding local climate mobility dynamics, identifying opportunities for collaboration, and advancing the development of District Climate Change Action Plans (DCCAPs). In Luwero, officials emphasized the growing challenge of pastoralist displacement, as traditional grazing areas are being converted for other uses, leaving communities without viable mobility routes. The district is also experiencing rising climate-induced disasters, including wildfires that have destroyed homes and increasing instances of food insecurity. While climate action in the district has been project-specific in the past, officials expressed a strong interest in mainstreaming climate and mobility issues into the district development plan, with implementation capacity flagged as a critical gap. The first step in this collaboration will be supporting the development of the district’s Climate Change Action Plan. As we continue working in Uganda, we remain committed to supporting climate mobility solutions in hotspot areas such as Kasese, home to the Muhosha IDP Camp, and Arua, which includes the Imvepi refugee settlement. Strengthening adaptation efforts in these communities remains a priority, ensuring that climate mobility responses are community-driven and action-oriented. 🇫🇯 The Communities Climate Adaptation Facility (C-CAF) Call for Proposals is now open in Fiji. The Global Centre for Climate Mobility’s Communities Climate Adaptation Facility (C-CAF) has launched a Call for Proposals in Fiji, offering climate quick-impact grants of up to $100,000 USD to support local communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis. These grants aim to enhance climate resilience, improve basic services, restore ecosystems, and support sustainable livelihoods, with a focus on women, indigenous communities, persons with disabilities, and displaced populations. Eligible applicants include climate-vulnerable communities, grassroots organizations, civil society groups, and indigenous organizations. This is an opportunity for community-led projects to access funding for climate-adaptation initiatives that directly support communities in Fiji. Interested applicants in Fiji are invited to submit proposals by 16 June 2025 through the The United Nations Global Marketplace (UNGM) portal. The district’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee will play a key role in shaping the next steps of collaboration with GCCM. As we continue working in Uganda, we remain committed to supporting climate mobility solutions in hotspot areas such as Kasese, home to the Muhosha IDP Camp, and Arua, which includes the Imvepi refugee settlement.
