At the FSOA Football Safety Officers Association we engage regularly with our member clubs to ensure we continue to grow on all levels. This helps us to make our meetings, conferences and events interesting and valuable to our members. Kevin Stump from Watford Football Club gave us some great feedback from our exhibition and conference last month which we want to share, as it is a great train of thought about always looking to improve and never being afraid to question your own actions. He told us: "The Conference topics were excellent and had me asking myself several questions and I have already put some action in place to make some changes. We all think we do a good job and then someone mentions something which we have not given any thought to. That what these sorts of Conferences are all about, making us question our own operation." 🕯️ Martyn’s Law Granted Royal Assent 🕯️ A powerful and long-awaited moment for public safety in the UK has arrived—Martyn’s Law has officially been granted Royal Assent, becoming law. Named in memory of Martyn Hett, who tragically lost his life in the Manchester Arena bombing on 22 May 2017, this legislation is the result of years of tireless campaigning by his incredible mother, Figen Murray OBE. The new law will require all UK venues with a capacity of 200+ to deliver evacuation training, while venues holding 800+ must implement additional measures such as CCTV and trained security staff. At the FSOA October Conference, we had the honour of welcoming Figen as a guest speaker. She took time from her demanding schedule to share her journey with us, and she captivated the entire room with her passion, dedication, and resilience. It was an unforgettable and deeply moving moment. 🙏 Since launching a petition in 2019, Figen has worked relentlessly—meeting ministers, earning a Master’s in Counter-Terrorism, visiting schools to educate young people about radicalisation, and even walking 200 miles to Downing Street in a final push for change. Her work was recognised with an OBE in 2022. Martyn’s Law is now more than a campaign—it's a lasting legacy that will save lives.
