Presented at the Michigan Safety Conference 2025 on two timely and impactful topics: 1️⃣ MI Part 115 Rules Update – Focused on the new County Materials Management Plans (MMPs) which aim to sustainably manage recyclables, organic materials, and solid waste—delivering real benefits to the economy, communities, and environment. 2️⃣ Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) – Explored ESG’s growing role in shaping strategy, driving compliance, and creating long-term value across sectors. #MichiganSafetyConference #MIPart115Rules #MMP #ESG #Sustainability #Fishbeck
Spring is a crucial time to protect infrastructure and prevent lasting damage. Chris Schmidt, Senior Construction Manager, understands these challenges firsthand through his ongoing work at the Gerald R. Ford Airport’s ConRAC (Consolidated Rent-A-Car) facility. Fishbeck serves as the Design Architect and Engineer of Record across multiple disciplines for this project, and as Contract Administrator, Chris is the eyes and ears on the ground. He ensures quality, design accuracy, and seamless communication between the project team and contractors. Why spring matters on large-scale projects: 🌱 Road Restrictions & Drainage: Spring thaw brings a period of road vulnerability, where heavy vehicle weight can damage softened surfaces. Keeping drains clear and managing debris is critical to prevent backups and flooding. 🌧️ Mud & Slip Hazards: As frost leaves the ground and rain increases, muddy conditions pose slip hazards and can track dirt and debris into sensitive areas. Extra precautions are taken to minimize risks and maintain clean job sites. 🔌 System Integration Risks: With the ConRAC project tying into the airport’s active infrastructure (sewer, storm, electrical, and mechanical systems), spring maintenance is vital to avoid disruptions that could impact airport operations. ☀️ Safety in Changing Seasons: As warmer weather arrives, site activity picks up and workers transition to lighter clothing. This shift requires heightened focus on safety protocols to prevent injuries during this busy time. The bigger picture: A well-maintained site doesn’t just protect the project — it safeguards surrounding infrastructure, keeps daily operations running smoothly, and ensures that everyone on site returns home safely. #ConstructionManagement #SpringMaintenance #InfrastructureProtection #ProjectSafety #EngineeringExcellence
Thanks to Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) for hosting us at today’s Media Day for the new ConRAC facility! 🚧✈️ As the designer on this $156 million project—Michigan’s first consolidated rental car facility—and alongside our construction partners Turner Construction Company and Kent Companies, we’re proud to help deliver a development that will reduce carbon emissions by 500,000 pounds per year and streamline travel for more than a million annual visitors to West Michigan. We braved the cold and wind to get a firsthand look at the progress (well worth it!), and had the honor of signing the ceremonial beam to celebrate this exciting milestone. We can’t wait to see this five‑story structure come to life by 2026! #ConRAC #ElevateGRR #GRR #WestMichigan #ConstructionInProgress #GrandRapids #WestMichiganConstruction

With 25 years in the industry, Deann Falkowski, P.E. knows a thing or two about keeping our infrastructure running smoothly. As a Senior Civil Engineer and Team Leader, she has spent much of her career helping the City of Lansing improve its sewer systems and protect the Grand River watershed. Deann’s advice? Think before you pour! Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) may go down the drain easily when hot, but as they cool, they harden; clogging pipes, causing backups, and even leading to costly sewer overflows. What not to do: ❌ Don’t pour grease or cooking oil down the sink. ❌ Don’t rinse greasy pans with hot water—it just pushes the problem further down the line. ❌ Don’t rely on garbage disposals—FOG can still build up in your pipes. What to do instead: ✔ Let it cool! Never pour hot grease into the sink. ✔ Store it in a sealed container like a jar or can. ✔ Toss it in the trash when full. A small change in disposal habits can protect your plumbing, prevent sewer backups, and help keep our waterways clean! #ThinkBeforeYouPour #FOGAwareness #InfrastructureMatters
As communities across Michigan face mounting housing challenges, local leaders are coming together to explore practical, long-term solutions. At the Michigan Municipal League Capital Conference, one of our Senior Brownfield Specialists, Trudy Galla, provided insight into recent updates to the Brownfield Redevelopment Financing Act and how they can support housing initiatives. Landon Barrow is one of our Transportation Engineers located in our Fishers, Indiana office. He shares why spring maintenance is essential for keeping our infrastructure safe and reliable! Common Winter Damage: • Potholes & Cracks: Water seeps into cracks, freezes, and expands, weakening the pavement and creating potholes. • Faded Markings & Signs: Snow, salt, and plowing wear down lane markings and signs, reducing visibility and making roads less safe, especially at night or in bad weather. • Drainage Issues: Clogged drains prevent water from flowing properly, weakening the road base. Why Spring Repairs Matter: • Prevent Bigger Problems: Early repairs stop minor issues from becoming costly failures. • Enhance Safety: Fixing potholes, repairing bridges, and repainting lines improve road safety. • Protect Vehicles: Timely repairs reduce wear and tear on tires, suspensions, and alignments. Community Benefits: • Smoother, Safer Travel: Well-maintained roads ensure safer, more efficient transportation. • Economic Impact: Repairs keep local economies moving and reduce repair costs for drivers. • Long-Term Savings: Regular maintenance extends the lifespan of infrastructure, preventing costly reconstructions. Thanks to Landon for sharing his expertise on keeping our communities safe! #InfrastructureSafety #RoadRepairs #TransportationEngineering #CommunitySafety #PreventativeMaintenance #RoadSafety
