As we continue to celebrate #WomensHistoryMonth, we'd like to take a moment to shine a spotlight on another Filoli Board Member, Donna Wills Colson! Thank you for your leadership, Donna! 🌱What inspired you to join the Board at Filoli? The incredible beauty and a shared family history. My family came to California as hard-rock mineral miners from Cornwall. ✨Can you share a defining moment in your career that shaped your leadership style? Yes, the first time I witnessed discrimination in the workplace, I committed to leading in a way that ensures everyone could reach their full potential. 🤔What challenges have you faced as a woman in leadership, and how have you overcome them? Managing a career, family, and philanthropy requires an amazing support system and partner. Fortunately, I have both. 👍What makes you feel empowered to express yourself, professionally or personally? Seeing positive change and progress toward goals is empowering. Sometimes that’s a culture shift or completed project, but celebrating these achievements is motivating. 💭Why is it important to highlight women's voices in history, art, and preservation? Women own half of all history, and our stories bring full circle a narrative that includes many emotions from the deepest suffering to the most ebullient delight. Art has been the means that women have shared these stories, through folk craft, jewelry, music, and (more recently) painting and sculpture. Preserving these ties to our past reminds us to constantly advance women’s initiatives and fight for our rights. Photo by Drew Altizer

We continue celebrating #WomensHistoryMonth by highlighting the incredible women at Filoli. We'd like to take a moment to shine a spotlight on Filoli Board Member Maggie Hazelrig! ✨ What inspired you to join the Board at Filoli? My late mother, a pioneering attorney in the tech industry, found profound peace and inspiration in nature and her garden. She introduced me to Filoli, sharing its serene beauty and historical significance. It became a place where we forged cherished memories, instilling in me a deep appreciation for both nature and history. Now, as a Board member, I'm driven to preserve this sanctuary, ensuring others can experience the same sense of peace and inspiration that my mother and I found here, and to make sure everyone has the chance to create those connections with nature, the past, and each other. ✨ What advice would you give young people who aspire to leadership in cultural or nonprofit organizations? Embrace your authenticity. Your unique perspective is your strength. Cultivate resilience – setbacks are inevitable and they build character. Lead with empathy, understanding that collaboration and lifting others up are paramount. Don't be afraid to advocate for your vision. Seek mentors, build a strong network, give time, set boundaries and remember that leadership is a team sport. And, most importantly, find your 'garden' – a space where you can reconnect with yourself and find inspiration. Thank you so much for your leadership, Maggie!
